Obituary for Charles E. Martin
Charles E. Martin, a longtime resident of Granite, Oklahoma passed away December 9, 2023, at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of seventy-nine.
On June 13, 1944, in Granite, Oklahoma Guy Evans Martin and Charley Jeanne (Dunn) Martin rejoiced at the birth of their son, Charles "Chuck" Evans Martin. Chuck was the eldest of eight children born into the Martin family. He was raised and educated in both Pampa, Texas and Granite, Oklahoma. Upon his graduation from Granite High School in 1962, he promptly enlisted in the United States Navy under the buddy system. With his best friend in tow, they attended boot camp together and even received their first duty assignment as a team. He served aboard the USS Mispillion and was consistently recognized as a hard worker with a great eye for detail. Chuck was exceptionally diligent at maintaining his white uniform in pristine condition; using his extra money to ensure this, he was hand-picked to be the assistant to the Admiral of the Pacific fleet. Once he completed his service, he began working for the M.W. Kellogg Corporation as a construction Superintendent, welder and pipe fitter. He was a member of the 344th pipe fitter's / welder's Union. Once again, Chuck used his hard work, attention to detail and knowledge to become a project manager or better yet a "Gold Hat" on various job sites. While working on the construction of a new Oscar Mayer plant near Beardstown, Illinois fate would intervene. While he was having breakfast at the Park Hotel Diner, he met a beautiful waitress who refused to give him hot sauce for his eggs because she thought he was joking. This young beautiful waitress's name was Patricia Ann Tandy. Chuck knew then that he would make her his bride. On May 20, 1968, Chuck and Patricia were united in marriage in Wellington, Texas. This marriage would be blessed with four children, Chuck, Kelly, Brandi, and Missy. Chuck received his vocational education from Penn State University in nuclear construction with emphasis in pipe fitting. Chuck's career took the Martin family all over the United States; working in construction and maintenance of oil and gas refineries as well as nuclear power plants such as Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant in Seabrook, New Hampshire, Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in San Luis Obispo County, Avila Beach, California, Princeton, New Jersey, and Kalamazoo, Michigan; however, Granite, Oklahoma was always home. The last job of his career was at Altus Air Force as the construction superintendent in the construction and development of new hangers for the C-130s in 1995. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, attending livestock sales and traveling. Chuck had an incredible passion for cows and Sorrel quarter horses. To Chuck, the view was always better while riding one of his horses. He took immense pride in teaching each of his grandchildren how to ride and take care of horses. He loved his family with an incredible passion and it knew no limits. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Granite. Chuck leaves a legacy of love and devotion to his family, friends, and community.
He was preceded in death by his father Guy Evans Martin; mother, Charley Jeanne (Dunn) Martin; brother, Jerry Lynn Martin, and sister, Joyce Hopson.
