Obituary of O.W. Dollins
Oscar Wendell Dollins of Altus passed away peacefully at Jackson County Memorial Hospital on April 29, 2014 surrounded by his family. O.W. was born in Bennington, Bryan County, OK October 14, 1937 to Elmer Artemus and Hazel Belle Scalf Dollins. He attended school at Prairie Hill between Olustee and Duke until it closed and then he moved to Altus Schools. He would have graduated with the class of 1955, but took a full time job six weeks prior to graduation. O.W. was united in marriage to Miss Barbara Ann Pryor of Blair on December 20, 1956 in the home of his future in-laws, Roy and Juanita Pryor. They settled in Altus where he was working for Altus Wholesale delivering groceries. Through the years, O.W. worked at various businesses in SW Oklahoma - City Concrete, Hatton Butane, Olustee Coop, State of OK Highway Dept and finally as Road Boss, Jackson County District #3 and Safety Coordinator, Jackson County. Some time amongst all of this, O.W. purchased an over the road truck with a grain trailer and a cattle trailer to drive independent. It didn't take long for him to get on a first name basis with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol "weight man", all he had to do was get across the Red River to avoid an "overweight ticket". Sometimes he made it and sometimes he had to call Barbara at the bank to "send money." He also had a concrete finishing business with Kenneth Newman. They constructed the Museum of the Western Prairie and poured several of the slabs and drive ways in the Star, Heritage Estates and Bicentennial, Altus Air Force Base, Additions here in Altus.
O.W. loved to grow things and work with his hands which is why he always had a garden. He also enjoyed farming, so they purchased 80 acres of ground west of Martha. Whatever he was doing, he was dedicated to the task at hand and excelled at all of them.
One daughter was born to O.W. and Barbara, Sharon D'Ann. He was a proud father, grandfather and great grandfather as was exhibited by the variety of things he did through the years - chaperoning the "after party" for the Central Junior High football games, bringing in fill dirt at local and county livestock shows and spreading in the show arena and in the holding pens. Over the years O.W. met and made many friends. He always had words of encouragement and believed that a handshake was more binding than a "signed" contract. Anyone he met was not a stranger for very long.
For several years, about spring time, the fishing bug would hit and he along with friends would make the long drive to Laredo, TX to fish in the Rio Grand for a week or so. This "men" only adventure would always culminate with a big fish fry in Olustee for all the families.
O.W. was preceded in death by his parents, E.A. and Belle Dollins; a brother, James; a sister, Gladys; and a son-in-law, Kevin Williams.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Altus, daughter, D'Ann Williams of Hollis, grandchildren, Justin Buxton and wife Sarah of Altus, Jay Gray of Clinton, MO, Jaime Davis and husband Roper of Hollis, great-granddaughters, Robyn-Marie Buxton and fianc"e Ryan Sherman of Altus, Harleigh Michelle Davis of Hollis and extended family.
Family visitation will be Friday May 2, 2014 from 6 to 7 pm at Lowell Tims. Funeral services for O.W. Dollins will be 10am Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Lowell Tims Chapel with Rev. Doug Altom and burial to follow at the Blair Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
