Mildred M. Parker McKee passed away peacefully on July 13, 2010, at the Chateau at Montereau in Warren Woods, Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was born on July 8, 1916, the third of four daughters born to Tobe H. and Maude J. Parker, in Mangum, Oklahoma. She and her sisters were instilled at an early age with a love for learning and education, and that became the core of her entire life. Mildred Parker married Wade McKee on September 27, 1941 and they enjoyed a devoted marriage until his death in March, 1997.
After their marriage, Mildred taught school in several locations and earned a PhD. in Home Economics from the University of Tulsa, where she ultimately became a full professor and Director of Community Service at the University. Her interests were especially centered on the advancement and education of women and she was instrumental in developing several innovative community based programs to enrich the lives of women and their families. Although she and Wade had no children of their own, her outreach to her students fostered the encouragement for many students to excel in their chosen fields and to strive to higher education in their own lives.
Even in retirement at Montereau, Mildred was active in many groups, including the Chorus, exercise classes, and the Laughter Club and she was an avid bridge player. Both Mildred and Wade were great travelers and shared many adventures around the world. Her love of life and zest for learning were apparent in all she did. Mildred will long be remembered in her home town of Mangum for her generous gifts to the Mangum Public Library and for donating the McKee Reading Corner in the children"s section of the library. Her love for education and learning has also led to her establishment of the Dr. Mildred M. McKee Women"s Scholarship Fund at her alma matre, the University of Tulsa, to provide a full-tuition scholarship to a female undergraduate student at the sophomore, junior or senior level who is majoring in education. Her generous legacy will continue to enrich the lives of deserving students long into the future.
Mildred was a truly amazing woman, far ahead of her time, and she will be remembered with love and admiration by all who knew her. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at Greer Funeral Home Chapel, in Mangum with Gary Houck officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum
