Obituary for Louise Jessie Minerva Snodgrass
Louise Snodgrass, age 86, passed away on June 27, 2021 at the Tamarack Retirement Center in Altus, OK.

Louise was born on August 21, 1934, in Fay, Oklahoma to Colonel Lafayette and Lucinda (Lord) Sober. At birth, her mother gave her the name Jessie Minerva. Her sister refused to call her Jessie so she became Louise. In 1974, she added it to her birth certificate so she could prove who she was.

Louise was the 5th of 6 children. When she was 3, her family moved to the farm where she grew up. When World War II came, all her older brothers went to war and she was the only help for her father and had to work on the farm. She developed a love of farm life and learned how to sustain the family during the war and depression. She accepted Christ at an early age.

She attended school in Oakwood and Fay. She loved school, but she especially loved softball. Upon graduating, she went to Oklahoma University to become a nurse. Her roommate and lab partner introduced her to a fellow graduate of Humphreys High School, Bill Snodgrass. Bill and Louise were soul-mates in the deepest sense of the word. They married in a double ceremony with O.L. and Janet Jones on December 24, 1953.

They moved back to Humphreys with Louise spending weekends at home and continuing nursing training in Oklahoma City during the week.

In 1955, daughter Deborah was born and Louise left nursing training shortly thereafter. Daughter Brenda was born in 1960 followed by son, Mark, in 1961.

Bill and Louise moved to Martha, OK, where He worked at the gin and she worked for the superintendent of Martha school. When they moved to Altus, Louise worked for Southside Schools. In 1987, she went to work for the county commissioners, followed by working in the county clerk’s office. She later became the county clerk, a position she held until retiring in 2008.

Upon retiring, Louise and Bill began farming and raising cattle. She rediscovered her love of the farm and they worked side by side until Bill’s passing in 2017. Even after losing Bill, she continued to plow, rake hay and help with the cattle when Mark took over the farming operation. Her last trip before she was unable to go any further was to see the wheat growing on the farm and to look at the baby cows.

Louise loved sewing, crafts, quilting and any type of needlework. She also loved gardening and putting up fruits and vegetables for her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her parents; 4 brothers: Willard, Verdell, Frank and Bill; and a daughter-in-law, Trish Snodgrass.

Louise is survived by her children: Deborah and Barry Milliner, Brenda Snodgrass, Michelle Fernandez; and Mark Snodgrass; grandchildren: Jessica Dillard, Callie Hendricks, Dustin Medlock and Brett Medlock; One sister: Annabelle Scott; 6 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff of the Tamarack Assisted Living Care Facility and Traditions Hospice for the loving care they gave Louise in her final months of life. They are angels on earth!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Quilters Group of the First United Methodist Church of Altus, Oklahoma.
