Obituary for William "Shawn" Whorton
William "Shawn" Whorton
November 25, 1972 - January 15, 2019

Shawn suffered a fatal heart attack at his home in Slidell, LA., Tuesday, January 15, 2019. He was born on November 25, 1972, in Hollis, OK, the second child of William Don "Bill" and Helen (Jones) Whorton. Shawn publically professed his faith and was baptized March 29, 1981, Hollis First Baptist Church.

Shawn graduated from Altus High School, and went on to college where he was introduced to drafting and physics which he greatly enjoyed and built the foundation for his engineering career. While in college Shawn met and married the mother of his only child William "Hunter".

Following college graduation, Shawn became a Boeing employee first assigned to Wichita, KS, then to Huntsville, AL, for several years before following assignments to Dallas, TX, Charleston, SC, and lastly New Orleans, LA. Boeing provided Shawn with many adventures and stories. His Boeing co-workers were his family. He traveled extensively throughout the USA and abroad. With several patents to his credit, and some pending, he was a dedicated Boeing manufacturing and design engineer on contract with NASA currently working with the Space Launch System in New Orleans, which is an American Space Shuttle launch vehicle. It's part of NASA's deep space exploration plans including a crewed mission to Mars. Shawn took pride in his work endeavors and to be part of the development of the most powerful rocket NASA has ever built. When completed, SLS will enable astronauts to begin their journey to explore destinations far into the solar system. Shawn's co-workers labeled him as a genus in his work expertise.

On January 20, 2017, Shawn married Kimberly, an Altus High schoolmate. Together they enjoyed entertaining their co-workers on their deck on the northeast shore of Lake Ponchartrain. Grilling and smoking delicious food was an accomplished art for Shawn. He talked of owning and operating a small bistro following retirement.

Shawn, like his dad, was a dedicated OU sports fan. He enjoyed deep-sea fishing trips with his co-workers. He enjoyed his boat and living near the water. He enjoyed his Harley. Hunter says that when he sees a Harley shirt it reminds him of his dad as that was always part of Shawn's casual wear. From an early age Shawn found relaxation strumming his guitar. He earned his sky diving certification and single engine pilot's license as young as possible. He was always an adventurous individual.

Shawn was six when his dad preceded him in death.

Shawn is survived by his wife, Kimberly, Slidell, LA; his son William "Hunter", Tulsa, OK; his mother and step-dad, Helen and Jimmy King, Oklahoma City, OK; his sister, Shellie and husband Curtis Thornton, Duncan, OK; his two nephews, Collin Thornton, Stillwater, OK, and Garrett Thornton, Duncan, OK; an aunt, Lynda Burns, Hollis, OK, and an uncle, Gail Jones, Duncan, OK. Hunter's mother and husband, Jennifer and Mark Jackson, Tulsa, OK. Shawn's beloved English bulldog, MoMo was his constant companion.

A memorial service honoring Shawn's life was held at The Open Arms Church, Slidell, LA, on January 24, 2019.

Family and friends celebrated Shawn's life with a private memorial service on February 3, 2019, at the Dryden Cemetery Chapel, Hollis, Oklahoma, with Shawn's childhood friend, Jeff Dill, officiating.
