Obituary for William Henry Carter Jr.
William H. "Bill" Carter, Jr., 53, passed away suddenly at his home in Altus on Saturday, January 31, 2009.
Bill was born June 10, 1955, in Columbus, Georgia, to William Henry and Ada Geneva (Brown) Carter. He and his family moved to Altus in 1968, and he graduated from Altus High School in 1973. Bill worked for a time in his family"s business, Carter Carpet, in Altus. In 1989, Bill graduated from the Correctional Officer Academy and went to work at the Oklahoma Department of Corrections State Reformatory at the Granite facility where he was a Lieutenant and a C.E.R.T. Team member. He received the Correctional Supervisor of the Year Award in 1997. He retired from the Oklahoma State Reformatory due to health problems in 2001.
Bill married Paula Ray on February 12, 1993, in Vernon, Texas. He enjoyed going to gun shows and auctions. His other hobbies included auto repair, gardening, and his Koi pond. He was also an avid "bargain hunter", but most of all, he loved helping family and friends with various projects.
Preceded in death by his father, William H. Carter, and a son, John Carter, Bill is survived by his wife, Paula, of the home in Altus; one daughter, Wendy Carter of Tacoma, Washington; one son, William Carter, III, of Cashmere, Washington; his mother, Geneva Jackson and husband Gene of Belvedere, South Carolina; two step-sons, Michael Wojtowich of Altus, and Ryan Miller, also of Altus; three sisters, Barbara Ammons of Clearwater, Florida, Debbea Saltrese of Augusta, Georgia, and Betty Ayers of North Augusta, Georgia; three brothers, Tommy House and James House of Belvedere, South Carolina, and Jack Norris of Ft. Mills, South Carolina, and one grandson, Trevon Carter of Tacoma, Washington.
The family will greet friends at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 4, 2009, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2009, at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus, Oklahoma.
