William Carl "Bill" Smith
William Carl "Bill" Smith, 80, of Altus, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2006, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus.
Bill was born May 17, 1926, to Erle and Nellie Susan (Wornock) Sith in Sanford, Colorado. He came from a third generation pioneer ranching family in Conejos County, Colorado, ad Rio Ariba County, New Mexico. Bill graduated from Sanford High School in 1944 and entered the United States Army Air Force where he served with the 9th Airborne Division in Germany in the 1945-46 occupation. He later attended Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado, and BYU in Provo, Utah.
Bill married Lorraine Bagwell January 7, 1951, in Manassa, Colorado. To this union were born three daughters, Roxanne, Teri Lynn, and Susie, and one son, Michael William, who died in infancy.
Bill began flying as a commercial pilot in Oklahoma in the late 1950's. He lived in Gore, Oklahoma at the time where he met his business and dear friend, J.B. Sheffield. Bill moved his family to Altus, Oklahoma, in the early 1960's to start Sheffield-Smith Spray Company, a chemical and aerial application firm. He was also the co-owner of the Sheffield-Smith Elevator and Supply
Company, which he and his partner purchased in the mid-1960's.
Bill accumulated many thousand hours flying over fields in southwest Oklahoma and retired at the age of 70.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Michael William, one brother, Bob Smith, and one sister, Doris Ann Smith.
Bill is survived by his wife, Lorraine Smith of the home in Altus; three daughters, Roxanne Brewer of Lawton, Terri Lynn Smith of Dallas, and Susie Fluckiger of San Antonio; three grandchildren, Jessica Brewer and Scott Brewer, Lawton, and Erin Fluckiger, San Antonio, and one sister, Frankie Jean Barr, Denver, Colorado.
