Obituary for Wanda June Self
Wanda June Jones Self, 88 of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2019 at Plantation Village after a lengthy illness.
Wanda was born July 31, 1930 in Soper, Oklahoma to Russell and Juanita Jones. She was raised in Blair, Oklahoma and graduated from Blair High School. Wanda worked with her mother at the Park Lane Beauty Salon. She later worked as secretary to the Dean of Students at Western Oklahoma State College for many years.
One day in Blair, Oklahoma a young man came to visit his aunt's sister, and Wanda met the love of her life and soul mate, David Whistler Self. They were married shortly after on December 18, 1949 in Blair, Oklahoma and they celebrated their 62nd anniversary before his passing in 2012.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Altus, Oklahoma. She was very active in Methodist Church activities including Kountry Kitchen. She enjoyed times with friends and family, attending Altus sporting events, enjoyed time at their cabin at Lake Altus. Some of her most treasured memories with their lake buddies and their families including the Harringtons, the Franks, the Childs, the Jenkins, the Coxes, the McMinns and the Ellises. She loved to take small trips to places such as Hugo Oklahoma, Sulpher, Oklahoma and Hot Springs Arkansas. Wanda truly enjoyed her granddaughter and great grandsons’ activities and was their biggest fan.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents Russell Jones mother Juanita Jones Jennings, husband David Whistler Self, sons, David Wayne Self, Ricky Dean Self, brother Tommy Jones, brother-in-law Billy Holmes.
She is survived by granddaughter; Jennifer Janae Self Burrow of Altus, Oklahoma, two great grandchildren; Byke David Burrow, Racer Scott Burrow, brother; Bobby Jones, daughter-in-law Donna Self; sister-in-law; Rosetta Holmes, nieces and nephews; Kendall Holmes, Toby Holmes, Kim Jones Tanner, Wendy Jones, Jeff Jones and Phillip Jones.
The family will receive guests on Thursday March 14, 2019, evening from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Memorial services have been scheduled for 2:00 pm Friday, March 15, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church with Johnney Morrow officiating. Private family graveside will be held prior to the memorial service. Funeral arrangements have be entrusted to Lowell – Tims Funeral Home, Altus, Oklahoma.
