Obituary for Verna Lea Nesmith
Verna Lea Nesmith, 89, of Mangum passed away at Grace Living Center in Mangum, Oklahoma on October 13, 2019. Verna was born to Leamon H. Wadley and Thelma L. (Kimber) Wadley. She was born January 22, 1930 in Meade, Kansas. When she was four, she moved to Minneola, Kansas. She moved with her family to California. While there she attended school in Inglewood, California until she was a freshman at age 15. The family then moved to Guymon, Oklahoma. Verna graduated from Guymon High school in May 1948.
While living in Guymon, Verna met her one true love, Clinton Nesmith. They were later married at the Guymon First Baptist Church on June 12, 1949. After marriage, she and Clinton moved to Mangum with Mike who was born in 1950. They owned and operated a tractor supply store in 1952. In 1954 Lynda was born and they moved to a farm east of Mangum. Mark was born in 1955 and they moved to Hester to farm more land. In 1959, Lea Ann was born and their family was complete. Clinton went to harvest and farm too, with Verna always taking care of the home an family as well as helping Clinton. One time they farmed up to 10,000 acres.
In 1994 they left the farm and moved to Mangum. Clinton and Verna spent sixty-six wonderful years together until his death in 2016. Clinton loved to aggravate Verna and she often said that was what she missed most when he was gone. Verna was a member of the Eastern Star and the Red River Cowboy Church. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and ESA. She was always having fun wherever she was. When her children were young their friends filled her house. They were always welcome, and their house was known as the place to be.
Verna is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clinton; and two grandsons, Keith and Joseph Cook.
Mrs. Nesmith is survived by her four children; Mike Nesmith, and wife Darla of Elk City, Lynda Cook of Mangum, Mark Nesmith of Mangum, and Lea Ann Powell and husband Burr of Mangum; One sister Norma Finley of Kingfisher, Oklahoma; One sister-in-law, Corky Casser of Austin, Texas; The family has 18 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren. That equals a lasting legacy beginning with a wonderful couple.
The family will receive friends at Greer Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2019
Graveside services will be held at 2:00p.m. Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Roselawn Cemetery in Mangum, Oklahoma.
