Twala Joy Hunter, age 83, passed away early Sunday morning, May 12, 2013, at her residence in Mangum.


Twala was born in Mangum, Oklahoma, on June 19, 1929, to Locey Virland and Bessie Vaughn (Smith) Warlick. Twala graduated from Mangum High School in 1947. On July 27, 1947 she would marry the love of her life, Howard Hunter and they would spend the next 47 wonderful years together. They farmed in the Lake Creek area and she also worked at the Greer County Court House, later moving to Jal, New Mexico where they raised their family. In 1969, Twala went to school in Kermit Texas, where she obtained her LVN license. In 1983 she went on to obtain her RN degree at New Mexico Jr College in Hobbs, New Mexico. She worked as a nurse in Kermit, Texas, Jal, New Mexico, Andrews, Texas, Quanah, Texas and Mangum, Oklahoma. In her later years she did volunteer work at the Cross Clinic in Mangum and for other local charities. Her hobbies included sewing, cooking, spending time with family and friends, and taking care of her two dachshunds, Toby and Sambo.


Preceded in death by her parents; husband and one sister, Verleen White, Twala is survived by four children, Cathryn Heard and husband Donald of Quanah, Texas, Howard (Danny) Hunter and wife Teresa of Hobbs, New Mexico, Nancy Lord and husband Alan of Katy, Texas, Lisa Hardaway and husband Michael of Kermit, Texas; thirteen grandchildren, Wade Heard of Quanah, Texas, Drew Heard of Quanah, Texas, Shelly Heard and spouse Kris Martinez of Childress, Texas, Lance Hunter and wife Amber of Granger, Texas, Ali Jo Hernandez and husband Luis of Austin, Texas, Jeffrey Hunter and wife Emily of Midland, Texas, Carolyn Noble and husband Jeff of Blacksberg, Virginia, Cortney Flores of Horizon City, Texas, Valerie Lord of Katy, Texas, Bradley Lord and wife Kim of Houston, Texas, Aaron Hardaway of Midland, Texas, Deana Butler of Kermit, Texas, and Hunter Hardaway and wife Michelle of Kermit, Texas; nineteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one brother, Henry Warlick of Fort Worth, Texas; and one sister-in-law Jean Hunter of Lake Creek, Oklahoma along with many other relatives and friends.


Funeral services for Twala Joy Hunter will be at 10a.m., Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Lake Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Alvin Funkhouser officiating and under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.


In lieu of flowers, the family wish donations be made to the Cross Clinic of Mangum or a charity of your choice.
