CARPER
Trueman Carper, age 84, of Mangum, passed away Wednesday evening, April 13, 2011, at Baptist Medical Center, in Oklahoma City.
Mr. Carper was born on April 18, 1926, in Sobel, Oklahoma to Young McKinney and Lena Rivers (French) Carper. At a young age, the family moved south of Gould, Oklahoma and Trueman graduated from Lewis Hill School. Shortly after graduation, he joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country. After returning home, he married Alice May "Dean" White on February 2, 1946, at the Bethel Baptist Church, south of Gould and they spent the next forty-seven wonderful years together before her death on August 31, 1993. Moving in to Mangum in 1950, Trueman worked at several locations until he began working for Buddy Roulain at the service station on Pennsylvania. Later they moved on North Louis Tittle where he began running the station in August of 1968. In July 1972, he purchased the DX station from Paul Elkins, changed the name to Carper Station and continued that operation until retiring to his garden and "windshield farming" with Dubbard Wynn in 1996. Trueman had a love for baseball, watching Bonanza on television, gardening, taking care of his chickens and spending time with his family.
Preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, Gary Paul Carper in 1947 and a brother, Kermit Carper, he is survived by his children, Donna McClendon and husband Lee of Altus and Davis Carper and wife Cathy of Mangum; four grandchildren, Matthew McClendon of Morgan Hill, California, Melissa Lederer and husband David of Newport News, Virginia, Dava Carper of College Station, Texas and Shelby Monroe and husband Matt of Mangum; two great grandchildren, Meghan Lederer and Emily Lederer; three sisters, Leatrice Carper of Oklahoma City, Imogene Pearson and Pauline LeCroy of Lubbock, Texas along with many other relatives and friends.
