Obituary for Thurmon B. Smith
Thurmon Smith, age 95, of Mangum, passed away early Thursday morning, November 24, 2011, at his home, in Mangum.
Mr. Smith was born in Coffman, Texas on December 11, 1915, to James Joshua and Mary Ellen (Hardy) Smith. In the late 1920"s the family moved to Tulsa and in the 1930"s to the Horse Branch area, in Greer County. On September 4, 1937, he married Juanita Wilson and they spent fifty-four wonderful years together before her death on November 3, 1991. Thurmon was later blessed when he met Rose (Webb) Kirby and they were married on August 27, 1998 and spent thirteen wonderful years together before his death. Thurmon spent two years, 1944 and 1945, serving his country in the United States Navy. After his discharge, he returned to Greer County where he drove a truck for Jewett Scott Trucking. Thurmon later bought a 1936 Ford truck and began trucking for many years. An avid OU fan, Thurmon retired in 1972, and spent his spare time bowling, attending Mangum athletic events and being with his family and friends.
Thurmon was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Nita; two brothers, Laymon Smith and Wilton Smith; two sisters, Jewell Smith and Ruby Bogard; one son, James Vernon Smith and two granddaughters, Suzanne White and Suzette White. He is survived by his wife, Rose, of the home; three children, Sue White of Wichita, Kansas, Donnie Smith and wife Joey of Mangum and Lynda Sifferman and husband Tom of Nixa, Missouri; five step-children, Betty Copeland of Altus, Louise Kahr and husband Greg of Broken Arrow, Wanda Roberts and husband Ron of Mangum, Sharon Kirby of McAlester and Dana Thompson and husband Rocky of Mangum; six grandchildren, Thurman White, Johnny White, Randy Whtie, Terry White and wife Cheryl, Renee Sifferman and Chris Sifferman; three great grandchildren, Shelby White, Jared White and Bella Adams; eight step-grandchildren, Sandra Kennedy, Eddie Prader, Milissa Plumer, John Golden, Rosetta Allen, Steven McMahan, Jeremy McManan and Shawn McMahan along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Thurman Smith will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 26, 2011, at Red River Cowboy Church with Pastor Darrell Coffman officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
The family will greet friends at Greer Funeral Home on Friday evening, November 25, 2011, from 6 until 7 p.m.
