Obituary for Thomas J. Malloy
Thomas J. Malloy, a longtime resident of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2024, at Harmon County Memorial Hospital in Hollis, Oklahoma, at the age of 82. He was born on November 22, 1942, to Robert O. Malloy, Sr. and Eva Lena (Ritter) Malloy.
Thomas spent his early years in Jerseyville, where he attended Catholic schools before graduating from Jerseyville High School. While he was in high school he worked for Sinclairs Grocery. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served from 1963-1969 serving as a Military Police Officer. His service took him to Fairbanks, Alaska, and later to Altus, Oklahoma, where he was honorably discharged. It was in Altus that he met the love of his life, Janet Sue Coffelt. After a year of courtship, they were married on December 31, 1966, in Jerseyville, Illinois.
Following their marriage, Tom and Janet made their home in Altus, Oklahoma. Tom found his true calling in radio advertising. After working briefly at the Altus Times, Thomas discovered his passion for radio and began a fifty-year radio advertising sales career. He found great joy in helping local businesses grow, creating unique promotions and platforms that supported his community. In particular, he developed "Bits for Bargain Radio," a platform that allowed local businesses to sell products via local radio. Through his hard work, dedication, and deep commitment to the success of his clients, Thomas made a lasting impact on the business landscape of Southwest Oklahoma.
Thomas retired in 2018 after a distinguished career with KWHW radio. His professionalism, work ethic, and love for the industry were evident in everything he did. He took pride in his work and was deeply honored by the relationships he built over the years with clients who became like family.
In his personal life, Thomas was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He and Janet, were blessed with three children, Tommy, Jera, and Michael. As a family man, Thomas was known for his love of the outdoors, particularly fishing and hunting, and his family vacations often took them to numerous lakes in Arkansas. He was a proud member of the Altus community, always putting his family first and ensuring that his work ethic and values were a model for those around him. His impeccable style was another signature of his personality-he wore the nicest suits, his shoes were always polished, and his tie was always straight.
Thomas J. Malloy's legacy lives on in the lives he touched-whether through his professional contributions or his loving family. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Robert Jr., Gene, and Jim Malloy, and his infant brother, Adam Malloy, as well as his beloved wife of fifty-three years, Janet (Coffelt) Malloy.
