She was born September 16, 1933 in Gould, Oklahoma to Othar and Ethel (Faith) Stephens. She married Melvin Bates on August 6, 1950 in Hollis, Oklahoma. After the children were grown, Melvin and Joyce were able to make regular visits to Las Vegas and other points of interest. They loved to dance and just enjoy life and each other. Joyce was a member of the Southside Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary.

Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Melvin of the home; three daughters, Carol Farl and husband Andy of Chickasha, Susie Huffman and husband Chuck of Norman and Donna Roberson and husband Bud of Altus; five grandchildren, Annesha Robertson, Jennifer Villani, Heath Huffman, Amanda Snodgrass, and Carl Roberson; one great-grandson, Preston Maxwell; one sister, Dorthy Teague of Amarillo, Texas; one brother, Jerry Stephens of Gould, Oklahoma; and a host of nephews, nieces, and other loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; three brothers; and her grandson, Kyle Reed.
