CALLINS

Rev. Samuel Washington Callins, age 75, of Mangum, passed away Monday afternoon, April 8, 2013, at his residence, in Mangum.

Mr. Callins was born in Mangum, Oklahoma on August 18, 1937, to Jesse and Ruby Mae (Washington) Callins. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, in Mangum, in 1955, Sam attended Langston University. Leaving Langston, Sam entered the U.S. Air Force where he proudly served his country for two years before being honorably discharged. Returning to Mangum, Sam worked for the City of Mangum and Community Action for several years. On June 23, 1967, Sam married the love of his life, Tina Mitchell, and they spent the next forty-five wonderful years together before his death. In 1968, Sam joined the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. Beginning his career at the Oklahoma State Reformatory, at Granite, Sam quickly moved up through the ranks and was assigned to correctional institutions at Lexington, Taft and Boley where he served as a lieutenant, captain and deputy warden. In 1985, he returned to Granite OSR, retiring on May 31, 1992. In 2000, Sam began consulting work at the Carver Center in Oklahoma City. In 2009, he and Tina returned to Mangum where he resided until his death. In his spare time, Sam enjoyed fishing, talking on the phone, playing dominoes, working on lawn mowers and spending time with his family and friends.

Preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jesse "Pete" Callins and John Douglas Callins, Sam is survived by his loving wife, Tina Callins, of the home; eight children, Bobby Callins of Florida, Jackie Ray and husband Robert of Mangum, Samuel Callins, Jr. and wife Nita of Oklahoma City, Frederick Callins of Albany, New York, Tina Ray and husband Jerry of Mangum, Robin Hendricks of Edmond, Geraldo Robinson of Lawton and Shawn Callins and wife Amie of Mangum; two brothers, James Callins and wife Annie of Mangum and Charles "Pokey" Callins and wife Sandra of Mangum along with many, many, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services for Sam Callins will be at 2 p.m., Saturday at the Mangum First Baptist Church with Rev. James Callins officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
