Obituary for Sallie Carder
Sallie Jo Carder, a life long resident of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away October 11, 2020 in Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma. She was 94 years old.

Sallie was born on May 30, 1926 to Joseph M. Burke and Sallie James Burke on the family farm in Tipton, Oklahoma. The family moved to Altus when Sallie was in the third grade, where her father, Joe, owned a grocery store in town and was a butcher. She attended Altus schools and participated in volleyball and softball, and was the 7th grade basketball queen. Sallie graduated as the Senior Class Valedictorian in 1945.

Sallie married the love of her life, Willie D. "Bill" Carder on November 1, 1947 and together they raised three sons, Mackey, Robert "Bob", and Eddy. Sallie was the secretary for several years at Washington Elementary and later went to work for the Department of Human Services in 1974, retiring in 1999. Sallie and Bill were active members of Tamarack Road Church of Christ where they volunteered their time organizing the church Food Room that helped feed families in need. Sallie loved sewing, gardening, canning fruits and vegetables, and creating beautiful flower arrangements, many of which won ribbons in the county fair. She was a longtime member and treasurer of the Altus Garden Club. She enjoyed researching her family genealogy and organizing family reunions. Sallie loved antiques and old quilts. She even dressed up as a pioneer woman, bringing all of her antique kitchen wares to her daughter-in-law's fourth grade class to tell a fun visual story of life in the past as only she could do. Sallie spent many summers with her grandsons in Oklahoma and Texas, always showing up for every activity. She was a talented painter, and most recently won a ribbon at the Jackson County Free Fair 2019 for her painting of the family homestead. Both Bill and Sallie enjoyed taking trips with their church group known as the Silver Saints. They had many fond memories of trips around Oklahoma and surrounding states with this group of friends. Sallie was a wonderful cook and one of her fondest memories in the kitchen was with her eldest great-granddaughter, Caroline, as she taught her how to make the perfect pie crust. And, even though she was in her 90's, she learned to FaceTime with her newest greats, Liv and Ky. She loved watching them play. Sallie's greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren and great grand children. She was once asked how she wanted to be remembered and she replied, "I want to be the person that someone would come to with their troubles and not be judged, and as a grandma that loved her grandkids and great grandchildren."

After their son, Bob, took over operations, Bill and Sallie continued to enjoy drives out to the farm to check on the cattle and the land that was homesteaded by Sallie's grandfather, Julian Burke. The family farm was an important part of their lives, and Sallie worked diligently to get it registered as one of Oklahoma's Centennial Farms. In their later years, Bill and Sallie moved to Tamarack Assisted Living

Sallie's legacy will continue on with her participation in the Oklahoma Historical Society's publication of the book Prairie Mothers. She, along with 52 other women in southwestern Oklahoma, will share stories of their childhood, and what life was like for their mothers in the early part of the twentieth century. There will be an interactive display at the Museum of the Western Prairie in Altus that will open in mid 2021.

Sallie was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her parents, Joseph and Sallie Burke, one sister, Irene Burke, and one granddaughter, Stephanie JeJuan Carder.

Sallie is survived by three sons, Mackey and his wife Priscilla Carder of Texas, Bob Carder of Altus, Eddy Carder and his wife Leeanne of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren, Shawn, Cody, Chase, and Zachary; six great-grand children, Jace, Layce, Liam, Caroline, Liv, and Kyler; three great-great grandchildren, Ava, Avery, and Asher; as well as nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at Tamarack Assisted Living Center for allowing Bill and Sallie to stay together as long as possible. The nursing staff took such loving care of our parents. The administrative staff, especially Kay and Mary went above and beyond, and were an integral part of their health and well-being, and keeping us all informed.

We also would like to thank Jackson County Memorial Hospital and Comanche County Memorial Hospital Covid ICU nurses and doctors for the wonderful care they gave our mother, and for allowing us to be with her before she passed.

A come and go visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at Lowell - Tims Funeral Home, and 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Thursday, October 15, 2020 at Lowell - Tims Funeral Home, Altus, Oklahoma.

A private family graveside service will be held on Friday at 2:00 the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
