Obituary for Ruth Smerke
Ruth Smerke, 92 died Thursday, September 9, 1999, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. funeral services are scheduled for 2pm Sunday at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home with Rev. Sonny Tims officiating. Burial will follow at the Altus Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims.
Ruth Smerke was born March 24, 1907, southeast of Altus, to Charles and Kate Clinkscales McAskill. She graduated from Ozark High School, attended Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, and later graduated from then Oklahoma A & M College in 1926. She taught school at Porter High, Ozark, and Altus for 24 years. On October 17, 1945, she married M.L. Smerke, who was with the bureau of Reclamation engaged in building the Lugert-Altus Irrigation District. In 1948 he was transferred to Monte Vista, Colorado, Three Rivers, Texas, ten to El Paso, Texas where they lived, and she taught school, for 25 years, moving back to Altus in 1974. She was a member of the Clionian Club, Daughters of the American revolution, American Association of University Women, and Eastern Star. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one brother, Robert McAskill.
She is survived by one brother, Sam McAskill of Altus, and eight nieces and nephews, Ellen Yates, Jan McAskill, tom McAskill, and John McAskill of Altus, Jean Petersen of Trophy Club, Texas, Mary McAskill of Phoneix, Arizona, Alan McAskill of Norman and Kim McAskill of Panhandle, Texas.
The family will receive friends from Saturday, 5 pm to 7pm at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
