Ruby Beatrice Hawkins, age 78, of Altus, passed away Sunday afternoon, October 6, 2013, at Select Specialty Hospital, in Oklahoma City.
Mrs. Hawkins was born in Asheville, North Carolina on July 21, 1935, to Alfred and Katherine (Edwards) Hunt. After high school graduation, she moved to Ft. Worth, Texas. In 1957, Ruby moved to Altus where she worked at Thelma"s Drive Inn, the dietary department at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, Altus Air Force Base Dietary with Civil Service and many years in private housekeeping for several different people. In 2012, she retired at the age of seventy-seven, due to her failing health. On April 23, 1968, Ruby married Glen John Hawkins and he preceded her in death on January 19, 1999 after thirty wonderful years of marriage. During Ruby and Glen"s more than thirty years of marriage, they "took in" may area children into their home. These children would live with them for days or months while their problems were being worked out. The time, effort and love devoted to these children has been returned tenfold by the love that these kids have for the Hawkins. Ruby was a devoted member of the Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in all of their sporting events, shopping and cross stitching.
Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen and one grandson, Jaleel Foye II, she is survived by seven children, Ronnie Greene of Jasper, Texas, Brenda Gibson and husband Jerry of Altus, Earl J. Richhart, Jr. and wife Sherry of Morgantown, Indiana, Rickey Richhart of Altus, James Richhart and wife Paulette of Altus, Carolyn Welch and husband LeRoy of Altus and Glennette Fairchild of Altus; one sister, Joyce R. McDaniel of Arlington, Texas; fifteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Ruby Hawkins will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Andy Young officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
The family will greet friends at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, October 8, 2013, from 6 until 7 p.m.
