Obituary for Rowan Wicker
Rowan Wicker, 79, resident of Mangum, Oklahoma passed away at her home surrounded by many of her loving family on March 25, 2022, in Mangum.
Rowan was born on April 6, 1942, to Cloyd and Gayle (Gallegly) Altom. She graduated from Blair High School and continued her education at Oklahoma State University, where she earned her degree in Business. Rowan later attended Southwestern State University and graduated with a degree in Education. She worked for Mangum Public Schools from August 1977 to August 1998. She started as a music teacher but spent most of her years teaching second and fifth grade students. Rowan was deeply passionate about shaping the minds of young people and preparing them for a bright future. Many students remember “Ms. Wicker” as their favorite teacher and as one who truly “mothered” them in the classroom.
Rowan married the love of her life, Dennis “Dink” Wicker, on July 6, 1962, in Blair, Oklahoma. In 1969, she and Dink joined the First Baptist Church of Mangum and became active members. She played piano for the church as part of the music ministry until 2019. She also taught Sunday School for most of those years. Rowan enjoyed nothing more than reading and studying her Bible. She gave her time, talent and wisdom to those around her. Her gentle spirit and kindness has influenced and affected the lives of many. She was a giver and true Biblical servant- the hands and feet of Jesus.
Family was high priority for Rowan. She so looked forward to the large family gatherings that occurred several times each year. Rowan loved the tradition of food, fellowship and fun when her family got together. She loved her 9 brothers and sisters dearly. Their closeness was made obvious by her actions both when they were and were not around.
Rowan is preceded in death by her parents, Cloyd and Gayle Altom, her son, Darren Wicker, her Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Neal and Ruth Wicker and brothers-in-law; John Cargal, Gary Wicker, John Gallagher.
Left to honor her loving memory, are her husband of 60 years, Dink Wicker, her son, Brad Wicker and his wife, Michelle, her daughter, Joy Remke, grandchildren: Laurynn Remke, Brookelynn Wakefield and husband Andrew, Brian Wicker and wife Kartrina, Megan Wicker, Brady Wicker and Brody Wicker; brothers and sisters: Navone Staggs and husband, Donald; James Altom and wife, Anne; Judie Gallagher; Derrall Altom and wife, Fran; Donald Altom and wife, Donna; Pat Warren and husband, James; Doug Altom and wife, Jayme; Jean Cargal; Mike Altom and Sonya Tutten; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends, colleagues, former students and church family.
