Robert "Bob" Zinn, age 85, a resident of Mangum since 1993, passed away Friday, February 24, 2017 at his home in Mangum.
Bob was born in Houston, Texas on October 1, 1931 to his parents Robert Alexander Zinn and Mary Louise (Hudson) Zinn. Bob grew up in Houston, Texas where he graduated high school and then moved to Louisiana where he worked in the oil fields. Two days after receiving his draft notice in 1951 he enlisted into the United States Air Force where he had six weeks of bomber reconnaissance training at Travis Air Force Base. He flew in reconnaissance missions over Korea and served in the Air Force during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955 and received an honorable discharge. After the service he worked as a civil engineer for the civil service at Holloman Air Force Base from 1956 until he retired in 1993. On March 26, 1966 he married the love of his life, Virginia Lee Brundige, in Alamogordo, New Mexico and they enjoyed over 50 years of marriage together. Bob and Virginia resided in Alamogordo for many years where Bob had his own country and western band, "Bob Zinn and the Mustangs". Bob played the guitar and was the lead vocalist. The band was also the backup band for many great acts including Loretta Lynn, Lefty Frizzle, Lacosta Tucker and Tanya Tucker as well as numerous up and coming acts. In 1971 Bob was privileged to work on the set and as an extra in the Walt Disney movie "Scandalous John" starring Brian Keith, Alfonso Arau, Michele Carey, and Harry Morgan. He worked on the set in two of the filming sites: Alamogordo, New Mexico and Tucson, Arizona. After retiring from the civil service Bob and Virginia moved to Mangum in 1993 and from 2000 to 2007 Bob served as the Mayor of Mangum. He was also an active member of the Lions Club, the American Legion, VFW, and the Cub Scouts. He enjoyed being outdoors camping, hunting, and fishing, and Bob was the original "MacGyver" and could fix anything. He always enjoyed tinkering and working on things. He will be missed very much.
