Robert Carroll Wetsel, age 86, of Granite, passed away early Wednesday morning, December 9, 2009, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Wetsel was born Northwest of Granite, at his grandparents" home, on July 13, 1923, to Earl and Eska (Curtis) Wetsel. After graduating from Mangum High School in 1941, Carroll left for Washington D.C. where he took a job with the Federal Housing Administration. In February 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country until March of 1946. Participating in many major battles in the Pacific Theater which included; Wake Island, Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Palau, Iwo Jima and the Phillipines. While home on leave, in July 1945, he met, Melvena Riddle, and on August 18, 1947, they were married and spent the next sixty-two wonderful years together before his death. A farmer-rancher at heart, Carroll also spent many years as a clerk for several auctions and at the Mangum Livestock Sales. Playing bridge, square dancing, calf roping, the Riding Club or anything to do with horses were Carroll"s favorite pastimes.
Preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Arlon Wetsel, during WWII, he is survived by his wife, Melvena, of the home; two sons, Bob Wetsel and Doreen of Granite and Bill Wetsel of Plano, Texas; two grandchildren, SGT Todd Wetsel and wife Krystal of Amarillo, Texas and Michelle Hodge and husband Stephen of San Antonio, Texas; one great granddaughter, Natalie Wetsel of Amarillo; one brother, Curtis Wetsel and wife Oma Mae of Mangum along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services for Robert Carroll Wetsel will be at 2 p.m., Friday, December 11, 2009, at the Granite First Baptist Church with Rev. Ben Van Vacter officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
The family will greet friends at Greer Funeral Home on Thursday from 6 until 7 p.m. in Mangum.
