Obituary for Reba Lou Hurst
Heaven rejoiced as the angels came to take one of their own to the waiting arms of Jesus. Reba Lou Hurst left this world surrounded by her loving family on January 24, 2012, in Hollis, Oklahoma.
Reba Lou was born June 29, 1931, in Mt. Park, Oklahoma, to Reba Messick. Her father, R.C. Messick, had died in a tragic accident one month before his beautiful daughter was born.
Reba Lou grew up in Mt. Park and graduated from Mt. Park School in 1949. Reba Lou married her high school sweetheart and best friend, Leon Emmons, on May 15, 1949. They began their life together farming and ranching. They continued farming until they became co-owners of Christopher"s Home Furnishing in Lawton, Oklahoma.
Leon and Reba"s marriage was blessed by the birth of three children, Sonya, Gary, and Rickey. They enjoyed an active and wonderful life together until cancer took the life of Leon on August 19, 1980. She married J.T. Hurst on May 31, 1983.
Reba Lou was a wonderful, loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, daughter, sister, relative, and friend to many. Reba was a member of First Baptist Church of Mangum, Oklahoma, where she lived until she moved into a nursing home. Reba Lou had Alzheimer"s.
She is survived by one daughter, Sonya Portwood of Yukon, Ok; two sons, Gary Emmons and wife Sandra of Russell, Ok and Rick Emmons of Walters, Ok.; eight grandchildren, Chris Portwood and wife Kristy, Jennifer Portwood Goodner and husband Rob, Cassandra Portwood, Heath Emmons and wife Breanna, Clint Emmons, Jared Emmons and wife Sharee, Krystal Emmons Olson and husband David and Dustin Emmons. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind two brothers, Bob Messick and wife JoAnn, and Tommie Messick and wife Joy and numerous nieces and nephews.
Reba was preceded in death by her parents R.C. Messick and Reba Watson; her loving husband, Leon Emmons; one brother, Jake Messick; and son-in-law, Charles Portwood.
Funeral Services have been scheduled for 2:00 pm, Friday at the First Baptist Church of Snyder, Oklahoma with Dr. Ken Baden officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
