Obituary for R. G. (Buck) Mims
R.G. (Buck) Mims, age 80, of Oklahoma City, formerly of Altus, Oklahoma, died Friday, January 23rd, 1998 at his home. Services are set for 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 26 at Lowell Tims Funeral Home, with Sonny Tims officiating.
Mims was born May 3, 1917 in Temple, Oklahoma to Annie and Gaston Mims. He was a 1936 graduate of Walters High School. He married Gladyce Wilson in 1946 at Wellington, KS. Mims served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served four years in England as a Gunner on the B-17. Mims worked for 17 years for General Motors after returning from World War II.
He moved to Altus and eventually became Recreation Director for the City of Altus. He served in that capacity for 22 years. He served as City Councilman from 1979 to 1981.
Mims was a board member of Jackson County Kids for 27 years. He received numerous awards during his years as Recreation Director and his many hours of work with the youth of Altus.
He was preceded in death by his wife and two sons, Buddy and Steve.
Survivors include his daughter Sherry Stillwell of Oklahoma City and grandchildren Stacey of Dallas, TX, Chris of Agoura Hills, CA and Susan of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two sisters, Lela Graham of Altus and Ruth Spratt of Duncan. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews including Sonya Reid and Sally and Lee Doughty of Altus, Oklahoma.
He will be greatly missed by "Honey", his rat terrier. She was his special friend, constant and faithful companion.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia Foundation.
