Obituary for Phyllis Louise Burns
Phyllis Louise Burns, a resident of Mangum passed to be with the Lord on June 10, 2025, at Mangum Skilled Nursing And Therapy, surrounded by her family. Phyllis, eighty-four, leaves behind a legacy defined by profound Christian faith, service, and an all-encompassing love for her family. She was the heart of her home and a pillar of her community.
Born Phyllis L. Berry on July 10, 1940, in Davenport, Oklahoma, to Wilbur Phelps Berry and Hazel Campbell Berry, she was raised and educated in the Chandler, Oklahoma area. From these roots grew a woman whose life became a testament to her Savior Jesus Christ.
Phyllis's faith was cornerstone of her existence. A devoted and active member of the Mangum Church of Christ, she didn't just attend, she *lived* her faith with every fiber of her being. She participated eagerly in church activities, supported it's mission wholeheartedly, and above all, loved Jesus Christ "with all her heart and soul and mind." Her well-worn Bible was a constant companion, her source of strength and joy. Phyllis possessed a unique perspective :she viewed all of life as one continuous act of worship. **Whether baking, caring for others. or simply going about her day, she sought to praise God in everything she did.
This devotion naturally flowed into a life of service. Professionally, Phyllis served as a caregiver in private homes and healthcare, a role that perfectly suited her nurturing spirit. Her compassion didn't retire when her career did. She generously donated her time to Meals on Wheels, ensuring others received nourishment and care. During summers, she poured her love for children and learning into the Methodist Church's Summer Reading Program, patiently helping young minds unlock the magic of books and improve their skills. Known throughout Mangum for her warm presence. Phyllis was also the friendly face behind delicious **homemade banana bread and baked goods, sharing her culinary gifts with neighbors and friends.** She often did without so others might have** -a quiet testament to her selfless nature.
Yet, above all else, Phyllis Burns was the ultimate caregiver and the true matriarch of her family. Caring for them was her deepest passion, her most cherished calling. She nurtured, guided, supported, and loved her family with unwavering dedication and boundless tenderness. Her home was a sanctuary of love, her presence a source of comfort and strength . She leaves behind a family profoundly shaped by her faith, her values, and her immense capacity to love.
