Obituary for Pauline Alma Austin
Pauline Austin, age 99, a longtime resident of Granite, passed away early Friday morning, September 12, 2014 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus.
Pauline was born in Carter, Oklahoma on October 20, 1914 to Columbus "Hoss" and Henrietta (Cranford) Holman. Graduating from Granite High School in 1932, Pauline was the oldest living alumni of the class of 32 for many years. Shortly after high school on October 14, 1933 she married Marion Alvin Austin in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma and they were married for well over 65 years before Alvin"s death in 1999. Pauline and Alvin resided in Lone Wolf for the first years of their marriage and moved to Granite in the early 40"s. During WWII Alvin was drafted by the United States Navy and the young family moved to California until Alvin"s discharge and the family moved back to Granite. The family continued to be on the move living in Texas and then back to California again and then to Mangum and later they settled in Granite where Pauline and Alvin resided for the rest of their lives. Pauline took care of her family and had the great task of raising five sons. She was a very active member of the First Assembly of God Church in Granite, where at the age of 99, she led the morning worship service where she always loved singing. Pauline was a proud member of the Lions Club since 1984 and was active in the Granite Chapter. For many years, she wrote articles in the Granite News Paper under the heading "Pauline"s Ponderings". After Alvin"s death in 1999 she became very involved at the Granite Senior Citizens where she loved playing board games, crosswords, word searches, and she always enjoyed being the score keeper and she was also a very dedicated member of the Senior Citizens Rhythm Band. Pauline was known for her Love of God, her beautiful penmanship, and her great sense of humor. She will be missed very much.
Preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Eddie Paul Austin (KIA) Vietnam and Donald Louis Austin; one granddaughter, Patricia Newton; she is also preceded by all nine of her brothers and sisters; Pauline is survived by three sons, Kenneth Austin and his wife Irene of Altus; Jerry Wayne Austin and his wife Irene of El Paso, Texas; Marion "Butch" Austin and his wife Bev of Cleburne, Texas; eleven grandchildren; twenty eight great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
The family will greet friends from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm, Sunday, September 14, 2014 at Greer Funeral Home in Granite.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Monday, September 15, 2014 at the First Assembly of God in Granite with Reverend Tom Magough officiating. Interment will follow at Granite City Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home, Granite.
