Obituary for Paul Edward Long
Paul Edward Long, 78, of Altus, passed away Friday, December 12, 2008, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Paul was born April 30, 1930 in Altus, Oklahoma. He grew up in Altus and graduated from Altus High School. He worked at the Delta and Plaza Theaters for five years while in junior high and high school. Paul married Evelyn Jo Howard on July 3, 1951, in Altus, ten days after their marriage, Paul left to serve his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953. When he came home from the service, he worked for Austin's Men's Wear in Altus for ten years. HE then went to work for Jake Hodges in the County Clerk's office as a clerk for one year and then was elected as County Clerk, where he served for twenty-five years until his retirement. He was instrumental in starting the TV ministry at the First Baptist Church several years ago and continued working in the ministry until his death.
Paul was a free-lance photographer in the local area for the Daily Oklahoman and all area TV stations. He was a member of the Altus Lion's Club and a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Altus. He served on the Board of Directors of the Museum of Western Prairie for a long time. Paul enjoyed "music night" in warren and loved to give to others. His favorite saying was "Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog."
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn, of the home in Altus; one daughter, Shearl Jean Davis and husband Charles Mikeal, also of Altus; two grandchildren, Crystal Nicole McDowell and husband Tyler of Blair and Mickey Wade Davis of Altus; one great-grandson, Kanin McDowell of Blair and two brothers-in-law, James Martin and George Hurt. Paul was preceded in death by his mother, Fairy Voorhies Long Rippetoe and his step-father, Orville Rippetoe.
