SMITH
Patsy Ruth Smith, age 75, of Mangum, passed away late Friday evening, September 16, 2011, at Covenant Specialty Hospital, in Lubbock, Texas.
Patsy was born on August 14, 1936, in Vinson, Oklahoma to Walter Lee and Virginia Maude (Chambers) Freeze. Shortly after graduating from Vinson in 1955, she began working for Southwest Bell as a telephone operator in Mangum. On May 16, 1956, she married James Fred Smith and they spent the next fifty-five years together before her death. After their marriage she completed beauty school, in Altus, and operated Lady Fair Beauty Salon until 1978. For the next thirty years, Patsy worked with Head Start, served as the Mangum Chamber of Commerce manager, was the city librarian and worked at the Greer County Museum until retiring in 2006, due to her health. After her retirement, she spent all the time she could with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, cooking and making her special macaroni and cheese. In 1988, she was named the "Chamber Person of the Year". Patsy was a very civic minded person who loved Mangum and promoted her hometown at every opportunity she could. She served on the Community Action and Great Plains County Board of Directors and was a former School Board member. Until she became ill, she served on many community committees, was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Extension Homemakers Club, Beautification Committee, and helped establish the Friends of the Library and the CARE unit, which later became New Hope of Mangum.
Preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Wendell Farrell Freeze and Lee James Freeze, she is survived by her husband, James Fred Smith, of the home, in Mangum; two daughters, Malenda Brooks and husband Jim Bob of Mangum and Jeanenne Downing of Lubbock, Texas; three grandsons, Kerry Mills and wife Kara of Mangum, Logan Downing of Dallas and Carson Downing of Lubbock; two great granddaughters, Kelsey Mills and McKenzie Mills; a twin sister, Peggy Pence of Granite; two brothers, Ed Freeze and wife Carolyn of Moore, Oklahoma and Ron Freeze and wife Jerene of Altus, Oklahoma and sister-in-law Rueleen Freeze of Big Spring, Texas along with many other relatives and a host of friends.
