Othello Sweet, age 86, of Mangum, passed away, at her home, Thursday, November 12, 2009.
Othello was born on November 1, 1923, in Olustee, Oklahoma to Joe O. and Celeste L. (Kelly) Garner, while her parents were visiting with her uncle. Due to her dad"s employment, the family lived in several locations over the years. After graduating from Mangum High School in 1940, she worked in a local dentist office before moving to Oklahoma City for other employment. On March 27, 1943, she married Joe Wayne Sweet in Oklahoma City and later moved back to Greer County. With Joe"s military career, Othello and Joe lived in many locations throughout their married life. After Joe"s death in 1976, Othello went back to school and fulfilled her dream of becoming a registered nurse. For the next ten years she lived in Nogales, Arizona and worked at Holy Cross Hospital before returning to Oklahoma City where she worked at several nursing homes. In 1992, she moved back to Mangum where she lived until her death.
Preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three children, Susan Lyn Conner, Lori Anne Eckersall and James Ray Sweet; one brother, Joe O. Garner, Jr. and one sister, Peggy Meyer, she is survived by one daughter, Sherri Beson and husband Bill of Oklahoma City; a special friend, Gabor Toth of Mangum; six grandchildren, Michael Beson and wife Christine, Amy Beson and Sean D"Addamio, Kerensa Conner, Megan Cole, Niccole Falconi and husband Ryan and Alexander McIntosh; four great grandchildren, Scarlett Cole, David Beson, James Beson and Asher D"Addamio; two brothers, Curtis Garner and wife Flora of Mangum and Kenneth Garner and wife Louise of Fayetteville, North Carolina along with many other friends and relatives.
Funeral services for Othello Sweet will be at 1 p.m., Monday, November 16, 2009, at Grace Christian Fellowship Church with Pastor Danny Atchley officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
