Oma Marie Suttle, 83, longtime Altus resident, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2009, at the English Village Nursing Home in Altus.
Oma was born September 16, 1925, in Lawton, Oklahoma, to Clinton and Anna (Story) Gentry. She graduated from Lawton High School in 1943 and during her high school years, she was a member of the all girls dance band and all girls marching band. They received first place in the state championship marching band in Norman, Oklahoma.
Oma Gentry married Coy Wilton Suttle, Jr. May 24, 1946, in Lawton, Oklahoma. They had sixty-three wonderful years together.
Oma was "Civilian of the Year" at Altus Air Force Base in October 1978, Woman of the Year from American Business Women"s Association in February of 1979, a member of the Eastern Star for fifty years, and a charter member of the Yucanduit Toastmistress Club. She worked Civil Service as a telegraph operator and training to be a film librarian at Ft. Sill Army Base from 1943 to 1946. From 1953 to 1981, Oma was a supply systems officer at Altus Air Force Base.
She was a Sunday school director for second grade at First Baptist Church for ten years. She was also the song director for the Adult 5 Sunday school for many years and a member of the adult choir for forty years. She also sang solos and was in small groups as well as being in the choir. Oma was a member of the WOSC community chorus for five years and a member of the Lawton Ft. Sill Oriental Band Ladies.
She is survived by two daughters, Kay Marie Mercer of Altus and Sheryl Jean Kinder and husband Steve of Anderson, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Catherine Marie Mercer, Robert Wilton Mercer and wife Ashley, Toby Wilson, and Erin Wilson; two great-grandchildren, Taygan Don Wilson and Gabryel Wolf Mercer; two nieces, Jane Anne Clark and husband Curtis of Yukon, Oklahoma, and Jimmie Louise LeHew and husband Mike of Houston, Texas; brother-in-law, Lester Suttle and wife Esther of Lawton; niece, Karen Shafer and husband Steve of Lawton, and nephew Gary Suttle and wife Carol of Okarche, Oklahoma. Extended family and many friends also survive her.
Oma was preceded in death by her husband, Coy W. Suttle, Jr. on June 30, 2009; her father Clinton Gentry; her mother, Anna Gentry; one son-in-law, Dennis Mercer; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ruth Suttle and Coy Wilton Suttle, Sr; her brother, James Gentry, and one sister-in-law, Mary Louise Wilson Gentry.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, or the music department at the First Baptist Church in Altus.
The family will receive friends Thursday, September 3, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Funeral Services for Oma Marie Suttle will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 4, 2009, at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating.
