Obituary for Oma Lee Burris
Oma Lee Burris, a beloved resident of Hollis, Oklahoma, entered into the eternal embrace of his Lord and Savior on March 8, 2025, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus, Oklahoma at the age of seventy-seven. Born on July 9, 1947, to Cornelius Burris and Clara May (Vaughn) Burris, Oma's life was a testament to faith, love, and unwavering devotion to God.
Raised in Gould, Oklahoma, Oma grew up as the son of sharecroppers, working alongside his family in the fields and forming an unbreakable bond with his siblings. At sixteen, his family moved to Hollis, where he graduated from high school. A gifted athlete, Oma pursued his passion for baseball, excelling as a minor league pitcher until a knee injury redirected his path. Yet, even in disappointment, Oma trusted in God's plan, knowing that his purpose extended far beyond the baseball diamond.
In the 1980s Oma moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where he worked as a caretaker and medication aide for several nursing homes and most well known at Renaissance Park Nursing facility. His passion for helping those in that particular setting spanned into the 90s and early 2000s until he retired from that endeavor and went on to work alongside his brother Ray Burris as Administrator at The Ray Burris Academy of Sports Instruction. There, he poured his heart into coaching and mentoring young athletes, sharing not only his love for the game but also the values of perseverance and integrity rooted in his faith. Upon returning to Hollis, he worked as a medication aide at Colonial Manor and Colonial Manor II, where his compassionate spirit brought comfort to many until his retirement.
Oma's life was a radiant reflection of his deep love for the Lord. He walked in faith daily, finding joy in sharing the gospel with his children through heartfelt church services and the singing of hymns. His relationship with God was personal and profound, and he lived as a living testimony of God's grace and mercy. Oma's faith was not confined to the walls of a church; it was woven into every aspect of his life, from his generosity to his unwavering kindness.
A man of boundless joy, Oma had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. His warm smile and infectious laughter could light up any room, and his love for storytelling, dominos, and cooking brought people together in celebration of life's simple pleasures. He never met a stranger, and his generosity knew no bounds-Oma would give freely to anyone in need, embodying the love of Christ in every action.
In the 1990s, Oma's life was blessed with love when he met and married Shirley Ingram after a chance encounter at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus. Their union was a beautiful testament to God's timing and the power of companionship.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Cornelius Burris and Clara May (Vaughn) Burris; his brothers, Donald Ray Burris and LeRoy Burris.
Oma leaves behind a legacy of faith and love that will forever inspire those who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Ingram, five cherished children: Pamela Burris Allen and Odell, Jr., Lee Burris, Wayne Burris, Christy Burris, and Michael Burris, as well as his honorary daughter, Tammy Ingram. He is also survived by his brother, Ray Burris, and Johnnie Burris. Also surviving Oma is his fifteen grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends who will carry forward his legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith.
Oma Lee Burris will be remembered not only for the joy he brought to every life he touched but also for his steadfast devotion to the Lord. His life was a living testimony to the power of faith, and his legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. As we celebrate his life, we take comfort in knowing that Oma is now rejoicing in the presence of his Savior, hearing the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
"For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." - Philippians 1:21
