Obituary for Nancy Elizabeth Schmedt
Nancy Elizabeth (Lemmon) Schmedt
On Saturday April 4, 2020 Nancy Elizabeth (Lemmon) Schmedt, loving wife of Fred, mother of Stephen, Michael and Lindy and grandmother of five grandchildren, passed away at the age of 71 in Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City, OK. Nancy was born December 17, 1948 in Coronado, California to Donal D. and Carolyn E. (Fondren) Lemmon.
She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Oklahoma State University in 1971 and a master of education degree from East Central University in 1988. While attending OSU she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
Nancy was an elementary school teacher, teaching one year at Perry Elementary in Perry, OK, one year at Dickson Elementary, Ardmore, OK and 26 years in third grade at Plainview Elementary, Ardmore, OK.
On August 22, 1970, Nancy married Theo Fred Schmedt at First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Ardmore. They made their first home in Stillwater, OK while both attended OSU. They lived in Perry, OK for one year and have resided in Ardmore since 1972.
Being the daughter of a career naval officer, Nancy lived around the coast, in Virginia, Florida, Louisiana, and California. She attended seven public schools including Madill, OK (while living with her maternal grandparents). Moving from Claremont, CA, Nancy spent her junior and senior years at Ardmore High School where she developed a special relationship with “my friend Linda”, the last person she spoke with just an hour before her stroke. Perhaps all these travels shaped her outgoing personality and honed her gift of connecting with people. Nancy could talk with a stranger for ten minutes and learn their life story.
Nancy had a passion for reading and collecting books. She adapted to reading on her Kindle but lamented not having the physical book. During her ‘early retirement from teaching’ years Nancy raised three children, participated in the extension homemaker’s group, helped start a pre-school at FUMC and joined a bridge group- a group that has been playing together for forty years. After Lindy started school, Nancy went back to teaching, retiring a second time in 2014. In retirement Nancy added additional bridge groups, two library reading groups, work at the Ardmore Soup Kitchen, the food pantry, and the FUMC Clothes Closet. Among all this she made time to be with her five grandchildren, another passion in her life.
Nancy will be remembered as a caring wife, mother and grandmother. And as a friend and teacher who was genuinely interested in the lives of those she knew. Her distinctive laugh can still be heard by all who knew her.
Nancy is survived by her husband Fred of the home in Ardmore. Her children and their spouses: Stephen Fred and Holly Skye (Austin) Schmedt, Edmond, OK; Michael Alexander and Becca Lee-Ann (Carter) Schmedt, Oklahoma City, OK; Lindy Elizabeth (Schmedt) and Justin Edward Fines, Brooklyn, NY. By her grandchildren: Sydney Elizabeth Schmedt, Tanner Fred Schmedt, Camryn Lasley Schmedt, Carter Alexander Schmedt and Adelyn Elizabeth Schmedt. Her mother, Carolyn Elizabeth (Fondern) Lemmon, Ardmore, OK. By her sisters: Donna Kathleen (Lemmon) and Richard Goulding Marriott III, Rosenburg, TX; Patrice Fondren (Lemmon) and Jeffrey W. Hughes, Coweta, OK. Nancy is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Nancy was preceded in death by: her father, Donal D. Lemmon; her grandparents Guy Monroe and Nellie Melvina (King) Lemmon and Westley Wich and Jennye Ruth (Bell) Fondren.
A private graveside service will be held Friday, April 10, 2020 at Altus City Cemetery, Altus, OK. Pastor David Daniel, FUMC Ardmore, will officiate. Honorary pallbearers are the Friends Class FUMC. Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, Altus, OK is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial donations in honor of Nancy may be made to: the Food & Resource Center of South Central Oklahoma, 801 Hailey SW, Ardmore, OK 73401; the Clothes Closet, FUMC, 501 W. Main St., Ardmore, OK 73401; or to a charity of choice.
