Oletha Gifford, age 88, of Granite, passed away at Mangum Community Hospital late Wednesday evening, December 31, 2008.
Oletha was born on April 20, 1920, at Vinson, Oklahoma to John and Sarah Jane Means. She married Charlie Jones at Melbourne, Arkansas on January 4, 1938, and they made their home in the Granite area until his death on June 21, 1969. To this union, five children were born; Claudie, Wanda, Faye, Charles and Sharen. Oletha married J.C. Gifford on April 9, 1977, at Granite. Oletha was a member of the Granite Assembly of God since 1942. She served as church secretary and treasurer for twenty-six years before resigning in 1984. She taught Sunday School and served as youth leader for several years. She enjoyed working for her Lord. She worked as a nurse"s aide in the Mangum City Hospital for almost eleven years, but was forced to quit because of osteoporosis. Oletha loved being a housewife, mother, grandmother and her husband"s right arm. She also enjoyed spending winters hosting a trailer park at Aransas Pass, Texas and fishing in the gulf and bays.
Preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Charlie, eight brothers and sisters, three daughters, Claudie Laverne Gifford, Laveta Faye Pendleton, Sharen Kaye McEwen and one grandson, Brandon Snow, she is survived by her husband, J.C. Gifford of the home; two children, Wanda (Snow) Matheny and husband Jim of Granite and Charles Jones and wife Teresa of Sayre; eleven grandchildren, Carletta, Sheldon, Stacy, Tonya, Robin, Darrin, David, Kimberly, Melissa, Jeremy, Joshua; seventeen great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Oletha Gifford will be at 2 p.m., Monday, January 5, 2009, at the Granite Assembly of God Church with Pastor Larry Newton and Rev. T.D. Gifford officiating. Interment will follow at Granite City Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Granite.
