MILLER
Michael W. Miller, Sr., age 59, of Mangum, passed away early Monday morning, August 31, 2009, at Southwestern Medical Center in Lawton.
Mr. Miller was born on June 22, 1950, in Hobart, Oklahoma, to Alan and Kathryn (Glass) Miller. Soon after his graduation from Hobart High School, Michael joined the United States Marines, in 1968, where he proudly served his country in several locations, including Vietnam. After being wounded in action, Michael was sent to Millington, Tennessee where he received medical care. A recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross) and the Purple Heart, Michael counted it a great honor to serve and protect his country. After his discharge in October 1969, he worked in several locations in the construction industry and for several years in Texarkana, Texas at the Army Depot. In the early 1980s, Michael returned to Oklahoma where he began working for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections at Granite OSR. On August 14, 1994, he married Ann (Shumate) Bull and they spent the next fifteen wonderful years together before his death. Retiring in early 2000, Michael held several jobs with the department, but one he always enjoyed most was being the firearms instructor because of his love for guns. In retirement he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, OU football and especially his grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his grandparents, Marvin and Alma Rae Howell, who were a very important part of his life; his father; one daughter, Tanna Michelle Miller and one great granddaughter, Carlie Dawn Monday, he is survived by his wife, Ann Miller of the home; his mother, Kathryn Smith and husband Jerry of Rocky, Oklahoma; four children, Wesley Miller, Jr. and wife Cristie of Mangum, Sarai Fulton and husband Matthew of Everett, Washington, Greg Bull and wife Sherry of Mangum and Schuyler Bull of Mangum; six grandchildren, Tana Miller of Mangum, Tell Monday and wife Laura of Mangum, Andrew Bull of Mangum, Lacy Bull of Mangum, Caleb Bull of Mangum and Chase Lankford of Lone Wolf; one sister, Patti Worthen of Cache, Oklahoma and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Michael Miller, Sr., will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at the Mangum First Baptist Church with Pastor Danny Atchley officiating. Interment will follow at Granite Rock Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
