Obituary for Melvin E. Moody
Rev. Melvin E. Moody, age 88 of Altus, Oklahoma passed away Friday, March 11, 2005 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
He was born October 8, 1916 in Cement, Oklahoma to Roy and Rebecca (Rimer) Moody.
Melvin and Geneva Ruth Cribbs were united in marriage on February 12, 1939 in Anadarko, OK and shared 66 wonderful years together.
Melvin was a 1935 graduate of Cement High School in Cement, OK. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. After returning from the war, Melvin managed lumber yards in Hugo, OK, Bristow OK, Robert Lee, TX and Midland, TX. Upon being called to the ministry, Melvin attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX graduating in 1957. In 1955 he was ordained to the ministry. He pastored the following Oklahoma Churches: Forrest Hills Baptist Church, Idabel, 1955-1956, First Baptist Church, Cooperton, 1956-1957, First Baptist Church, Fletcher, 1957-1961, First Baptist Church, Walters, 1961-1968, First Baptist Church, Henryetta, 1968-1974, First Baptist Church, Altus (Associate Pastor and Church Administrator) 1974-1982. Melvin served on the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma as Chairman of the Budget Committee and a member of the Evangelism Committee. Upon retirement Brother Mel continued his ministries as pastor of First Baptist Church, Buffalo Gap, TX. In 1985 Mel and Geneva returned to Altus. Subsequently they served two area churches, First Baptist Church, Willow and Hess Baptist Church, Elmer completing his ministry in 1994.
His beloved wife Geneva stood by his side throughout their 40 year ministry.
In addition to his love for his Lord and family, Melvin loved the mountains and especially loved to fish and hunt with his sons. He enjoyed golfing and playing pinochle with friends and family.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Rebecca Moody, brother, R.D. Moody, sisters, Lorene Posey, Dorothy Swift, and infant sister, Rebecca Moody.
He is lovingly survived by his wife Geneva; five children, Ron Moody and his wife Glenda of Dillon, Montana, Kaye Young and her husband Don of Roanoke, Virginia, Becky Moody of Altus, Stephen Moody of Helena, Montana and Dane Moody also of Helena, Montana; eleven grandchildren, Amy Black, Angels Matthew, Luke Moody, Brad McClure, Marc McClure, Eric Bates, Ashley Bates, Cody Moody, Melissa Moody, Rhiannon Lindsey and Megan Tremel; thirteen great-grandchildren many relatives and a host of friends.
Visitation will be Monday, March 14th, 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Services for Rev. Melvin E. Moody will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, March 15th at the First Baptist Church of Altus. Rev. Keith Wiginton and Dr. Jeff Moore will be officiating.
Interment will be held at the Fletcher Cemetery, Fletcher, OK. Rev. Moody, Melvin's nephew, will officiate.
