MAX GARTON


Max Dodson Garton, resident of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at Lake Texoma of Kingston, Oklahoma, at the age of 80.
Max was born on November 11, 1938, in Hollis, Oklahoma, to Carl and Henrietta Massey Garton.
He graduated from Hollis High School in 1957. He served in the Oklahoma National Guard from February 1956 to March 1958 then four years in the Marine Corp when he was honorably discharged in March 1962 for Good Conduct, Marksman Pistol, Expert Rifle and Sharpshooter Rifle. After serving in the Marine's he came home to marry the love of his life, Sarah Ann Gibbons at the Gould Church of Christ on September 8, 1962.
Max attended the Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology. He started to work for Ultramar Diamond Shamrock Corporation eventually retiring from the company in 2000 after 33 years of service.
Max enjoyed his fishing so much that he spent his vacation time at the mountains in Colorado camping with family and friends. His joy was fly fishing, lake fishing at Hollis and Lake Texoma, gunsmithing, knife and jewelry making as well as an avid coin collector and was a life long fan of the Oklahoma Sooners. Max and Sarah enjoyed their retirement years traveling locally and abroad.
Max was a devoted Christian and an active member of the Bell Avenue Church of Christ in Amarillo, TX.
Max is survived by his wife Sarah Ann of the home, his sister Bennie Ruth Garton UpChruch and brother Phil Garton and wife, Donna Garton.
Max is preceded in death by his parents Carl and Henrietta Massey Garton and a brother Donald Garton.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 10, 2018, at the Gould Church of Christ. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Hollis, Oklahoma. Minster Chris Webb of Kingston, Oklahoma, will officiate. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to High Plains Children Home in Amarillo, Texas and Westveiw Boys Home in Hollis, Oklahoma.
