Obituary for Mary Nell Sipes Mock
Mary Nell Sipes Mock passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, April 17, 2007, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Mary Nell was born February 5, 1924 in the historic "Rock House" south of Olustee, Oklahoma. The home, built by her grandfather L.Z. Eddleman in 1881, was once the headquarters for the sprawling "Cross S Ranch". Mary Nell was the daughter of Orley and Nellie Eddleman Sipes, pioneer merchants of Olustee, Oklahoma.
She attended the University of Oklaoma and was later employed by Sohio Oil Company in Oklahoma City. In 1949 she met and married Paul Harrison Mock and they established their home in Altus, Oklahoma.
Mary Nell was an avid student of history and a great lover of music. She was a member of the Anne lee Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, The First Families of Twin Territories, The Museum of the Western Prairie, the Western Trails Historical Society, and the Jackson County Historical Society. She was past president of the Aldonian Club and an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday School.
She will be remembered as a great lover of family and for keeping alive her rich family heritage of Texas and Oklahoma history, especially that of her families "Cross S Ranch" and it's Headquarters which has been nominated for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
Family and friends describe Mary Nell as filled with grace and beauty and the epitome of class and elegance. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and their husbands, Helen and Carl Lightner and Jane and J.D. Prater. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Paul, one son, Paul Harrison Mock, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Irving, Texas; one daughter, Melissa Brewster and her husband Dr. Scot Brewster and their children, Sterling, Meredith and Spencer, all of Rancho Santa Fe, California; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be private with a Memorial Service following at 2:00 pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Altus, Oklahoma on Thursday, April 19, 2007. Following the service will be a reception in the Church Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial gifts be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Mary Nell's name for research on Alzheimer's Disease.
