Mary Margaret Winters was born September 8, 1917 to Susan Nettie Frans and Charles Monroe Heatly at Jester, Oklahoma. She passed away on February 8, 2016 in Elk City Nursing Home at the age of 98 years, 5 months.
Mary Margaret attended school at Eastview and graduated in 1933. She received her bachelor"s degree from Southwestern State College at Weatherford in 1938 and her master"s degree from Southeastern State College in Durant, Oklahoma in 1957.
She married Wilbur Harry Winters on September 8, 1935 at Mangum Oklahoma. To their union, three children were born, Wilbur Jr., Margaret Sue, and Judith Anne.
Mary Margaret was a grade school teacher for 30 years. She taught at Reed, Vici, Mangum, and Western Heights in Oklahoma City. Upon retirement in 1982, she and Wilbur moved back to Mangum where they were both very active members of the First United Methodist Church, Retired Teachers Association, and many other civic activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her infant son Wilbur Jr., her husband Wilbur, and her brother and wife Elmo and Daisy Heatly. She is survived by her daughters Margaret Snipes and husband Rob of Elk City, Judith Benefiel and husband John of Oklahoma City, grandchildren Dana Zimmerman and husband Hal, Rhett Benefiel and wife Julie, Troy Benefiel, Susan Lyon and husband Emil, and Will Snipes and wife Candise. Great-grandchildren are Mitchell, Kayla, Sidney and Johnny Benefiel, Jack, Hal Jr. and Tamara Zimmerman, Adam Lyon, Benton Snipes, and a tenth expected in July.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 16 at the First United Methodist Church of Mangum with Rev. Marsha Purtell officiating. Burial will follow at the Jester Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
