Mary Ferne Barrett
Obituary
Ferne Barrett, of Altus, Oklahoma, went to be with her Lord on Friday, December 19, 2014. She was born September 17, 1925 to Fred and Grace Caves of Blair, Oklahoma and grew up on the family farm west of Blair. Ferne attended Blair schools where she was drum majorette in the Blair High School band. She attended Abilene Christian College and worked for Rothschild"s in Oklahoma City where she did their window displays.
She married Charles Reed Barrett on October 28, 1944, a marriage that grew stronger every year. They were active in the Martha Baptist Church and later in the First Baptist Church in Altus. She served as Sunday School teacher and mentor for young women, and was involved in outreach to shut-ins, in prayer ministries, jail visitation and the Gideon International Auxiliary. Having a servant heart, her ministry was service"touching, loving, encouraging, lifting up the beaten-down and the discouraged. She became role model, best friend and "life-changing" hero to countless people over the years. Her focus was always on Jesus Christ, not herself.
She had an artistic flair, being a skilled chalk-talk artist and painter
On January 15, 2003, her life dramatically changed when she suffered a paralyzing stroke on the right side of her body. Initially Charles and one caregiver, Brenda Torres, took care of her; however, as Charles" health declined, she eventually required round-the clock care by a group of loving caregivers. During these many years, her radiance and Godly spirit only increased, giving inspiration to countless family and friends that all kinds of hardships can be borne by centering our focus on the eternal.
Ferne is survived by daughter Rita and husband Fred Jackson of Sacramento, California and two sons David and wife, Carolyn of Monument, Colorado, and John and wife Martha of Martha, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren, including Kimberly Barrett-Johnson, Rachael Hogan, Kim Barrett, Andrea Dolson, Rebekah Miller, Elizabeth Moum, Christine Sloan, Nicholas Jackson, Joseph Barrett, Hunter Barrett, Charlcey Barrett; eighteen great-great grandchildren, including Adriel Barrett-Johnson, Shannon-Kate Barrett-Johnson, Grace Barrett-Johnson, Theo Barrett-Johnson, Joshua Hogan, Jacob Hogan, Jonathan Hogan, Jack Dolson, Josiah Moum, Liam Moum, Ashley Sloan, Emily Sloan, Benjamin Jackson, Hannah Jackson, Caleb Jackson, Johnathon Barrett, Joel Barrett and Colton Barrett.
Ferne was preceded in death by Charles, who died in 2010, daughter Rebekah, one son Gary and a grandson Johnathon Barrett.
She finished life well. Her witness transcended generations. To God be the glory.
