Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home.
Marshall Carl McCoy was born March 12th, 1916 in Freestone County, Texas to James Arthur and Linnie Elsie (Despain) McCoy. The family moved to Chickasha, Oklahoma in 1919. He received all of his public schooling in the Chickasha Public School System. His ministry education came from reading and correspondence school.
As a young boy, he delivered newspapers in Chickasha; The Oklahoman-Times, Oklahoma News, and the Chickasha Daily Express. Later, as a teen, he worked three years for the Western Union delivering telegrams and packages on a bicycle.
He was united in marriage to Lucille Yoder on June 20, 1936 in Chickasha, Oklahoma.
He was converted at age 13 and placed his membership in the First Assembly of God in Chickasha. He was active in the church, serving as an officer in the youth department, an officer and teacher in the Sunday School Department. He also served for a short time on the Church Board as a Deacon. He was the Music Director for several years. He remained active in the Chickasha Assembly of God until his work transferred him to another community. In each community he lived, he found a church in which he could be active and serve God.
He was occupied for three years at the Crawford Mattress Company in Chickasha, then for five years with the Donut Corporation of America, managing food processing plants in Chickasha, Wichita Falls, TX, New Berlin, NY and Lisbon, NY.
He began his ministry traveling with the late Evangelist George Hayes, speaking in youth services and conducting the singing for revivals.
In 1943, he began a full-time ministry, Pastoring an Assembly of God in Stecker, Oklahoma. Due to the need for defense workers, he worked for 18 months at Douglas Aircraft (presently Tinker) in Oklahoma City, lived in Chickasha and commuted daily to Oklahoma City and mid-week and Sundays to Stecker.
In 1946 he was called to Pastor the First Assembly of God in Altus. In 1949 he was elected to the office of District Youth Director for the Assemblies of God Youth in the entire state of Oklahoma. He served in that office for nearly four years. While in that position, he also served on the National Youth Committee in Springfield, MO.
In 1953 he returned to Altus and resumed his ministry in the First Assembly of Altus.
He designed and supervised the building of a new church building (1954-55) at 421 West Commerce. This building was destroyed by fire February 2, 1981. He then led the congregation in re-locating the church to its present location, 1400 Falcon Road. He also designed the present building.
He served on the Board of Directors of the Assemblies of God in Oklahoma for 30 years, four years by virtue of office while State Youth Director and 26 years as Presbyter of Churches located in eight counties of Southwestern Oklahoma. In addition to serving his Church and State Organization, he considered Jackson County to be his parish and had a desire to be an active part of the community.
He was a member of the Altus Chamber of Commerce until his retirement. A member of both the Altus and Jackson County Ministerial Alliance, serving as an officer in each organization. He served three terms (eight years) on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Jackson County. Two of these years he was Co-Chairman of the fund drive committee, then three years he served as the Chairman of the Board. He also served over 25 years on the Salvation Army Advisory Board along with serving on the Jackson County Home Health Care Board and the Tri-County Homemakers Advisory Council.
He loved Altus, and the citizens of Altus so chose to remain among good friends upon his retirement in October 1983.
Survivors include: one son, Don McCoy and his wife Peggy of Plano, Texas; two granddaughters, Vicki Walker and her husband Nolan of Orlando, FL and Crystal Stepan and her husband Glenn of Richmond, TX; four great-grandchildren, Michael Walker, Matthew Walker, Amber Stevenson and her husband Denny and Clinton Schmidt; one great-great-grandson, Calab Stevenson.
