Obituary for Marian Bryant-Silk
On Sunday, June 20, 2022, Marian Bryant-Silk, loving mother and grandmother, went to be with her Heavenly Father at the age of 94.
Marian Grey Chadwick was born on July 14, 1927 in Straits, North Carolina to Walter and Ida Chadwick. She grew up a mile away from the ocean which fostered her love of the coast. She went to a one room schoolhouse and graduated from Smyrna High School, where she learned to speak French and was voted “Prettiest in the Class”, in May of 1944.
She met Lawrence Edward Bryant, a sailor in the U.S. Coast Guard, who was stationed at Fort Macon on Atlantic Beach. She and Lawrence were married on August 4, 1944. They moved to Mangum and raised their two daughters, Bonnie and Kathe. Marian worked as a switchboard operator for the telephone company early on in their marriage. She later enjoyed working for “Janie’s Fashions”, the “Style Shop”, in the First Baptist Church nursery, and then lastly as a Home Health Care worker. Lawrence owned and operated “Bryant & Sons Construction”, which built several well known buildings around Mangum including the “JCMH Family Medical Center”, the original “United”, a laundry mat, a car wash, and several brick homes around Mangum including their own home. They were happily married for 38 years until Lawrence passed away in March of 1982. After many years, Marian met and later married, Kenneth “Doc” Silk. Marian and Doc lived in Mangum for several years until Doc passed away.
Nonne, as her grandkids would call her, was loved deeply by her grandkids and great-grandkids. She loved spending time with them and celebrating their accomplishments by cutting out every single newspaper article pertaining to them and making scrapbooks. She even attended an overnight band trip, as a chaperone, with her granddaughter Tobi. She loved stealing kisses from her grandkids as often as she could. She never once missed anyones birthday or anniversary. She loved keeping in touch with family and friends through writing letters or phone calls. You would never see her looking anything less than perfectly put together. Her hair, nails, and make-up were always flawless. She took amazing care of herself by working in her yard and riding her stationary bike. She was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. Some of her favorite things were drinking coffee (black-no sugar), playing cards, and was a pro at dominoes. She was a member of E.S.A. and loved to have coffee with her friends. She loved redbirds, lighthouses, magnolias, geraniums, Tom Selleck, the colors green and peach, seafood, Luigi’s calazones, sweet potatoes, popcorn and rootbeer. She enjoyed watching “Wheel of Fortune”, “Magnum P.I.”, “Golden Girls”, “Days of Our Lives”, and, of course, her favorite OKC Thunder, North Carolina Tar Hills, L.A. Lakers, and Duke Blue Devils basketball. She was best known for her butterfinger ice cream, chex mix, rum balls, peanut brittle, banana nut bread, pumpkin, pecan, and pineapple pies. She was an amazing cook, baker, and exceptional seamstress. She sewed all of Bonnie and Kathe’s clothes while growing up and even many of her grandkids’ clothes. She was loved by so many and will be missed terribly.
Marian was preceded in death by her mother, Ida, and her father, Walter, her brothers, Clay and William, and her sisters, Margaret, Estelle, and Vivian, her husbands, Lawrence and Doc, her daughter, Bonnie, her grandson, Jeff. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathe and Ron Gay of Mangum, her grandson and his wife, Christopher Todd and Amy Gay of Antlers, OK, her granddaughter and her husband, Lance and Tobi Lanning of Mangum, OK, her granddaughter and her husband, Jennifer and Brian Horchier of Rogers, Arkansas, her granddaughter and her husband, Traci and Delbert Cotton of Olustee, OK, her grandson and his wife, Timothy and Marie Gay of Ponca City, her great-grandkids, Koby and Kyler Lanning, Chloe and Decklin Gay, Bryce Slippey, Tristan and Lexie Gay, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and good friends.
