Margaretha Harriman, age 88, of Mangum, passed away Sunday morning, June 17, 2012, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Harriman was born in Rasdorf, Germany on June 10, 1924, to Reinhold and Philomena (Laibach) Weber. Growing up in Rasdorf, she graduated from high school and was drafted into the German Army in 1944 to man an anti-aircraft gun in Braunschweig, Germany. In 1945, she returned home where she met the love of her life, Duane Harriman, an American soldier, and on February 3, 1953, they were married in Germany. Returning to Ft. Campbell, Kentucky with the 2nd Armored Division of the United States Army, they served in several other locations around the world before retiring in California in 1974, after 30 years of service with Duane retiring as a Command Sergeant Major. Margaretha continued living in California until 2001, when she moved to Greer County to be near her niece, Margaret Schwabe. In her spare time, Margaretha enjoyed gardening, sewing, oil painting and was talented in every aspect of life.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and four sisters, she is survived by her sister, Klara Krieger of Rasdorf, Germany and many nieces and nephews, including Margaret Schwabe of Mangum.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 22, 2012, in Margaretha Harriman"s home town, Rasdorf, Germany. Cremation services have been entrusted to Greer Funeral Home of Mangum and Margaretha will be returned to her homeland, in the near future, for burial.
