CALLINS

Marcus Ray Callins, age 52, was born June 5, 1957 in Clinton, Oklahoma to the late Leonard Smith and Vernell L. Wells. At the age of 7 years, Ray was adopted by his father, John D. Callins. He was raised and nurtured by John and Vernell L. Callins in Mangum, Oklahoma.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1974. He served in Germany and Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. He received an Honorable Discharge. After leaving the military, Ray moved to Altus, Oklahoma where he was employed at Jackson County Memorial Hospital and Altus Air Force Base. He worked many years as a farm hand for Bill Southall. He married Sandra Murphy and in this marriage, they had one son born, Christopher Ray Callins. They shared seventeen years together.

Ray was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Mangum, Oklahoma. He had a tremendous love for music and electronics. Ray loved to hunt and fish with his son Christopher. Ray also loved all of his nieces and nephews. Harmony, his special great-niece, had a part of his heart!

Ray often took time to assist other people with working on their cars and whatever their needs were and he never complained. He had a love for everyone. Even though we knew his medical condition, he always smiled when he greeted you.

Having renewed his relationship with the Lord, Marcus Ray Callins passed away, Tuesday, April 27, 2010 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma following a lengthy illness.

Cherishing his memory are the survivors: his mother Vernell L. Callins, of Lawton; his son, Christopher Ray Callins and wife Bonnie; grandson Braden and granddaughter Karissa, all of Altus; his paternal grandmother, Donnie M. Green of Mangum; three brothers, John D. Callins, Jr. and wife Jennifer McLaughlin of Lawton, Leonard R. Smith and wife of Altus and Leonard Smith, Jr. of Oklahoma City; six sisters, his twin sister, Marcia Kay Wurtenbert and husband David of Lawton, Teresa L. Callins of Lawton, Barbara Callins-Boatner of Denver, Colorado, Michelle and Donnie Smith of Mangum and Latonya Wells of Lawton along with a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, his biological father, one brother, Ricky Callins; three aunts, Gloria Murphy, Vera Wells and Diane Davis; one uncle Jesse (Pete) Callins and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
