Obituary for Lydia Gwendolene Marie Barnett
ss Gwen Marie Barnett, age 81, passed away at Plantation Village Nursing Home in Altus on Friday, July 16, 2004. Funeral services will be Monday, July 19, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery in Hollis.
Lydia Gwendolene Marie (Cansler) Barnett was born December 8, 1922 in the McKnight community of Harmon County to Earnest and Ethel Cansler. She attended school at LaCasa, Arnett, and Ron. She was a member of the first graduating class at the new Ron High School in 1941. She married Raymond Barnett on October 5, 1940 at Erick, Oklahoma. This fifty-two year union was blessed by three children, Raylene, Sharon and Rickey.
Gwen was a member of the Altus First Baptist Church from 1927 until 1957 when the family moved to Hollis. She taught children's Sunday School at Hollis First Baptist for many years. She worked as a receptionist at the Hollis Medical Clinic and assisted her husband at Barnett Funeral Home in Hollis for many years.
After retiring in 1981, she and her husband moved to Altus, rejoining the First Baptist Church. After her husband's death in 1992, she enjoyed volunteering and meeting with friends at the Senior Citizen Meal Site. In 1996, KWHW radio and Southwest Oklahoma Community Action recognized Gwen as the Older American of the Year.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Barnett; brother, Earl Cansler; sister, Johnnie Crabb; grandchildren, Nickoles Barnett and Kristie Sikes and an infant brother Earnest Leon Cansler.
Survivors include a sister, Zella Ford, Hollis, Oklahoma; brother Jerry Cansler and wife JoAnn, Flint, Texas; daughters, Raylene Quisenberry and husband B.J. of Watonga, Oklahoma and Sharon Ford of Altus, Oklahoma; son, Rick Barnett and wife Nellie, Durant, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Kevin Dill, Richmond, Virginia; Kim Karns, Yukon, Oklahoma, Kayla Bull, and husband Ricky, altus, Oklahoma; Kyle Ford and wife Jennifer of Altus, Oklahoma; Eric Barnett and wife Missy, Hayley Miller and husband Brent all of Flower Mound, Texas; Andrea Meeks and husband Mark, Duncan, Oklahoma; Bill Quisenberry and wife Jenny of Amarillo, Texas, Larry Quisenberry, Florence, Texas; Debbie Wynne and husband Mich, Amarillo, Texas; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
The Barnett family will greet friends at Lowell-tims Funeral Home from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday evening, July 18, 2004. Funeral Services will be under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
