Lona Southward
Services for Lona Southward, 89, have been scheduled for 2:00pm Thursday, September 2, 1993 in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Pate officiating. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. The family will be receiving visitors at the Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6:30 until 9:00 pm. Lola Southward was born November 10, 1903 at Plainview,, Texas to John and Ada McWhorter Hopkins. Mother moved to Oklahoma with her dad at age 6. Her dad met Miss Kitty and they were married in 1922. Lona and Guy Hixson were married in 1923 and moved to a farm north of Headrick where they lived until Guy was killed in an auto accident in 1961. A year later Lona moved to 801 North Thomas where she resided. In 1965 she married Orville Southward and he preceded her in death in 1991. When she could no longer live alone, she moved to Houston, Texas, in November, 1992 to be near her daughter and son-in-law.
Lona joined Headrick Methodist Church in 1927 where she was active until the church disbanded. Then she joined the United First Methodist Church in Altus. she was active until her health failed. In Headrick she taught adult Sunday school for 20 years. She was an active member of the Women's Methodist Union and served as president several times.
Lona was active in the Democratic Party. She served 6 years as president of the Jackson County Club. She won several honors at district and state level. She was an Outstanding Lady of the Democratic Federation and the 4th district. She was a very dedicated Democrat.
Mrs. Southward is survived by her daughter Jonna Whatley and husband Dick of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Nan Whatley of Houston Texas; Jon Whatley of Fort Collins, Colorado; one great grandchild Robin Whatley of Fort Collins, Colorado; two nephews; Royce Hopkins of Brookshire, Texas; Lemac Hopkins of Sun City, Arizona; two nieces Joyce McLain of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Lois Ann King of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a host of other relatives and friends
Mrs Southward was preceded in death by her husband Guy Hixson in 1961 and parents and second husband Orville Southward in 1991.
