Obituary for Lillian Adams
Lillian Adams, age 99, passed away Saturday, 10/17/2020. She was a near life-long resident of Jackson County and currently resided at Magnolia Creek Skilled Nursing Center.
Lillian was born in 1921 to Alvin and Nina (Leister) Spiva in a house near the Red River, south of Olustee. She was the eldest daughter of eight children and attended Harmony School.
In 1937, she married Loy Adams, a farmer south of Olustee. The following year, she gave birth to their first son, Lonnie Adams. Early during World War II, Loy joined the Navy and he moved Lillian to California to be closer to the extended Adams family, which had moved there a few years earlier.
In October of 1942, Lillian gave birth to a second son, Paul (Doug) Adams. In 1947, the family moved back to Oklahoma, and purchased a farm southwest of Olustee. Six years after returning to Olustee, another son, Keith Adams, was born. In that small farm house southwest of Olustee Lillian raised her family, assisted her husband Loy and participated in the Olustee Baptist Church as well as many different clubs and civic organizations. Lillian was known as a wonderful cook and seamstress, making many of the boys’ shirts. She also loved needlework, crochet, embroidery, and growing flowers.
After 30 years on the farm, Loy and Lillian moved to Altus. Lillian attended classes at Altus Junior College and became a licensed nurses aide. She also worked as a receptionist and assistant for a local chiropractor. After the death of her husband in 1985, Lillian continued to live in their Altus home. She was very active and enjoyed traveling to see family and attended many senior country-western dances. In her late 70’s she decided to buy a horse, truck and trailer, and began participating group trail rides and cattle drives all over Oklahoma. Lillian had a passion for gardening and loved caring for her garden and flowerbeds which she meticulously kept and maintained. She was a loving mother and grandmother and enjoyed teaching her grandkids how to cook, sew, dance and garden and never failed to help her family during tough times.
Lillian was a member of the Southside Baptist Church in Altus. She was preceded in death by her husband Loy, her oldest son Lonnie, and her great-grandson Aaron Prenot. She is survived by two sons, Paul (Doug) of Fresno California, and Keith of Olustee, nine grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. Graveside rites will be held at the Olustee Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2020.
