Obituary for Lila Shadid
LILA SHADID
1925-2020

Lila Shadid passed away January 9, 2020 at age 94. Lila was born October 9, 1925 in Kenefic, Oklahoma to Gardner and Faye Walker. Lila was a 1944 graduate of Altus High School. She married Hoyt Shadid on June 19, 1948 in Vernon, Texas. Lila prided herself as bookkeeper for the Dodge and Plymouth dealership that she and Hoyt co-owned.

In 1956, she and Hoyt had their first and only child, Robin Shadid Wray. From that time on, Lila enjoyed being everything from "room mother" to "class parent." Lila considered all of Robin's friends her own children and enjoyed every age and stage that this journey had to offer.

In 1963, Hoyt became Mayor of Altus and Lila was honored to assume the role of "First Lady." She proudly stood by her husband's side attending hundreds of civic events. She was an active member of "The Officer's Wives Club," "The Jackson County Democratic Women's Association" and "The Eastern Star," just to name a few. She was the true example of the saying, "Behind every good man, stands a great woman!" In addition to being a wife and mother, Lila enjoyed helping the Shadid family at their women's dress shop, The Powder Puff. She worked there when needed from the late 50's until the doors closed in 1995.

Lila's greatest joy was November 14, 1982, when her first grandchild, Bennett Christopher Wray IV was born and then again when her second grandchild, Lauren Kelsey Wray, was born on January 19, 1987. She quickly picked up where she left off, and Christopher and Kelsey's friends became like her own grandchildren. All their friends, as did Christopher and Kelsey, knew her as "Gran." Nothing would bring a smile to her face like spending time with her "grandkids."

Lila was preceded in death by her parents, Gardner and Faye Walker, her husband, Hoyt, her baby sister, DeEtte Walker and her brother, William Gardner Walker and her brother and sister-in-law, Maxie Walker and his wife, Gerre. She is survived by her daughter, Robin Shadid Wray of Destin, Florida and her husband, Chris; two grandchildren, Christopher Wray and his wife, Erin, of Los Angeles, California; Kelsey Wray Segler and her husband, Kevin of Plano, Texas; her sister-in-law, Jimmie Shadid; her two sisters and best friends, Loreta Walker and Olga Shadid Hawkins of Altus, Oklahoma.

She is also survived by five nieces, Stephanie Walker Brater and her husband, Craig of Indianapolis, Indiana; Kristie Walker of San Diego, California; DeEtte Walker and her husband, John McDonald of Atlanta, Georgia; Janine Whitson and her husband, Alan of Fort Smith, Arkansas; Darla Walker of Fort Smith, Arkansas; five nephews, Brad Walker and his wife, Valerie of Bethesda, Maryland; Steven Shadid of Norman, Oklahoma; Jay Douglas Shadid and his wife, Patrice of Panhandle, Texas; Randel Shadid and his wife, Dana of Edmond, Oklahoma; Barry Shadid and his wife, Dorene of Edmond, Oklahoma; and many great nieces and nephews and her loving friends and caregivers, Liz Ditmore, Paula Vasquez and Paula Davis.

Lila not only read her Bible daily, but she truly studied it. Her love for her Lord and Savior and her faith in His word reassures those of us who are His that we will see her again.

Lila's family wants to extend a special thank you to all the Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice staff. They are truly angels on this earth and they will always have our deepest gratitude.

In lieu of flowers, you may make memorial donations to the Hoyt Shadid Scholarship Fund at the Western Oklahoma State College Foundations in memory of Lila Shadid.
