AUTRY
Lester Calvin Autry, age 95, of Altus, passed away Sunday, April 17, 2016, at Plantation Village Nursing Home, in Altus.
Mr. Autry was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on February 25, 1921, to James M. and Gainor Ellie (King) Autry. Soon after graduating from Fayetteville High School, Les joined the Army Air Corps where he proudly served for the next twenty-four years. On December 12, 1946, he married Elsie Beatrice Evans in Fayetteville, North Carolina and she preceded him in death on March 25, 1994. During his 24 years of military service, Les served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, receiving numerous decorations, medals, commendations, and citations for valor and exemplary service. In WWII, Lester served three years in North Africa.
Les attained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and retired on October 31, 1970, from Seymour Johnson AFB, NC. Later, he and Elsie moved to Altus where he was a supervisor with Civil Service for the 443rd Supply Squadron, retiring in 1983. After Elsie"s death in 1994, he married Leta (Marple) Anderson in 1995 and she preceded him in death on August 25, 2011. Through the years, Les was very involved in the Altus First Baptist Church where he was an active member of Sunday School, the Intercessory Prayer Ministry and Keenagers. In his spare time he enjoyed traveling and playing dominoes.
Preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; one brother, Carl Autry and his daughter-in-law, Janet Autry, he is survived by one son, Michael Autry of Pineville, Louisiana; two grandchildren, Michael James Autry II and Brandy Joan Autry; special nieces and nephews, Glyna Olson and husband Phil of Altus, and Gema Marple and husband Randy, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Lester Calvin Autry will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doug Altom officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
