Obituary for Lee Roy Crawford
Lee Roy Crawford, loving husband and devoted father and grandfather, passed from this life to his heavenly home on November 28, 2018 at the age of 90 years.
Lee Roy was born in Arlie, Texas on July 21, 1928 to his parents, Chester and Verbie Crawford. He grew up in Hollis, but also spent a few years in Monterey, California where his family lived during his early teenage years. He graduated from Westview High School, Hollis, Oklahoma, where he enjoyed playing baseball. After attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma, he served his country for almost two years in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and he was stationed in Korea. Lee Roy returned home after receiving an honorable discharge from service and married the love of his life, Melba Mayhugh, on November 8, 1952 in Hollis. Lee Roy and Melba recently had the blessing of celebrating their 66th wedding anniversary together. Lee Roy managed the local cotton gin at the beginning of establishing his family in Hollis and then farmed and ranched for over 50 years until his retirement. He was a longtime member of the Hollis First Baptist Church and served on the board of the Motley Gin for many years. Lee Roy greatly enjoyed being a farmer, his daily coffee shop visits with friends and watching Dallas Cowboys and OU football, but his greatest joy was being a father and grandfather and spending time with his family. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion and the importance and love of family.
Lee Roy was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Andy and Maggie Mayhugh; his sisters-in-law, Lorene Bartlett and Irvine Castleman; and his brothers-in-law, Kenneth McClendon, Carroll Carrick, Calvin Castleman, David Clinton and Otis Buis.
He is survived by his wife Melba Crawford; his son Craig Crawford and wife Kathe of Altus, Oklahoma; his daughter Carolyn Cummins and husband Jeff of Norman, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Connor Cummins of Burbank, California, Riley Cummins and wife Annabelle of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, Colby Crawford and wife Kelsey of Altus, Oklahoma, Claire Van Horn and husband Caleb of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Caleb Crawford of Perryton, Texas; and one great-grandchild, Chapman Cummins of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Lee Roy is also survived by his sister Betty McClendon of Edmond, Oklahoma, his sister-in-law Lavonne Buis of Fort Worth, Texas, his sister-in-law Wilda Coomes and husband Norman of Plainfield, Indiana, his brother-in-law Kenneth Bartlett of Hollis, Oklahoma and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 3:00 pm on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at the Hollis First Baptist Church with interment following at Fairmount Cemetery, Hollis, Oklahoma.
Memorial contributions may be made in Lee Roy’s name to First Baptist Church, Hollis, Oklahoma.
