Laura Murphy, age 91, passed away Wednesday morning, September 28, 2011, at her residence, in Mangum.
Mrs. Murphy was born on March 17, 1920, in Carwell, Texas to Ananias and Mamie (Jackson) Henderson. Laura attended Booker T. Washington School, in Mangum. In 1943, she moved to Oakland, California where she spent many years serving others as a nurse in both a hospital setting and in home health care. A long-time member of St. John Baptist Church, Laura came home in 1970, to retire, in Mangum. When she wasn"t taking care of others, she spent her time fishing, cooking, sewing and attending church. An accomplished artist and beautician, Laura loved spending time with her family and friends.
Preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Albert Henderson, Charlie Young, Samuel Foster and Ed Green, she is survived by her niece, Peggy Reed and husband James of Mangum; sister-in-law Etta Mae Anderson of Ardmore, Oklahoma; niece, Trenda Taylor and husband Carl of Oakland, California, niece Margie Sharon Jones of Oakland, California and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services for Laura Murphy will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, October 1, 2011, at St. John Baptist Church, in Mangum. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
