Obituary for Laura M. Jones
Funeral Services for Laura M. Jones are scheduled as follows: Wake Services are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, 1992 at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church with Father Bill Bryce officiating. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church with Father Tim Luschen officiating. Burial will follow at the Altus City Cemetery.
Mrs. Jones died October 13, 1992 in Altus following an extended illness. Lowell Tims Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Jones was born August 28th, 1916 in Waterloo, NY to Joseph and Concetta (Vento) Sperlazza. She married Harold Jones July 7, 1939, came to Altus in October 1939 as the new bride of the former Marine Corps Sergeant, and has remained a resident of the Altus area until the day of her death. Three years ago, in 1989, they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Through the years she has been very active in the Catholic Church. She was very active in the Prince of Peace Church Altar Society, in which she served as president for several years. Laura also served several years as state delegate to the National Catholic Women's Organization. Until her death, she was a Eucharistic Minister.
Laura took an active interest in national and international affairs. During World War II, while her Marine husband was being wounded at Iwo Jima, she joined the ranks of "Rosie the Riveteers" building bombers at the Altus AFB. She was later involved in the Erolethian Club, the VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. Her interest and support were appreciated at the highest levels of our government. President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan wrote to her and sent their "heartfelt thanks for your friendship and support. The last four years have given us many reasons to celebrate, but still more to hope. Our task now is not simply to reshape policies and reform programs, but to create a better nation and maintain a just peace throughout the world. With your help and prayers, we can reach our goals and demonstrate that America's best days are yet to come. God bless you - and God Bless America."
She was well-known for her gardening skills and was active in the Altus Garden Club and served as president several times. Laura was actively involved in charity work, helping organize Food Drives, Rummage Sales, clothing for the needy and bake sales. She had a reputation for never turning away if help was needed. Her door was always open, and no one was a stranger. She loved cooking and shared her culinary talents with many appreciative friends as well as her family. She loved animals, particularly her dogs, who were priviledged members of the family, to the extent she even bought cookies just for her dogs. She loved reading so much that her family accused her of "speed-reading", judging from the number of books she read and sent on to relatives. Laura was very interested in Southwestern culture and art and was active in the Southwestern Art Association. She was active in the Oklahoma Rock and Mineral Society and she's got two huge piles of rock to prove it.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; three brothers; five sisters.
Survivors include: her husband, Harold Jones of the home; three children, Patrick L. Jones of Omaha, NE, Patricia L. Jones of Phillips Ranch, CA and H. Bob Jones of San Antonio, TX; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
